A Year in Prison for Smoking a Joint in Tunisia

The enforcement of the country’s draconian drug law sends thousands of Tunisians to prison each year merely for consuming or possessing small quantities of cannabis for personal use. Tunisian authorities should revise the law to eliminate all prison sentences for recreational drug use or possession.

The government approved and sent to parliament on December 30, 2015, a draft revision to the drug law. Parliament has yet to announce the schedule for its debate and vote on the draft.

And this is different than some of the states in the U.S. how?
Caught with a joint in Texas and it’s a minimum of six months in jail. It’s worse in Florida, Idaho, Arizona and Iowa.

Except for violence at the time of arrest, I don’t really understand what these people are complaining about! The law is very clear: If you smoke a joint, you go behind bars. You’re a grown up sane person, so don’t fucking do it if you don’t wanna go to jail. Very simple.

Tunisia should stop this stupid law. I had the idea that instead of putting them in jail, they could do free hours of cleaning the streets, then a fee, then no sanction. The Tunisian government is scared of how the people are going to react (especially the extremist) and are afraid of more terrorist attacks from ISIS.
But I just hope that my country will have the balls to keep moving forward.

Good. They’re all young students so what if they become addicts, what would happen to Tunisia’s future?

At this point all intelligent and honest people know that prohibition is folly and terrorism and a way to control people and minorities and leave substances and money in the hand of various Mafias…."Third world" countries just give their brutal version of (decades long) western irresponsible politics and American infamous "War on Drugs"….
