Growing Cannabis Outdoors In Canada. This Year I Am Growing Autoflowers. What I’ve Learned So Far!

Let’s face it cannabis is a smelly plant. That’s why I’m using auto flower cannabis to grow outdoors in Canada. This reduces the smell indoor as well still giving me high gills. With photoperiod Canabis I find that it can be a more labour intensive process. My hopes are that the autoflower with give me the luxury to simply water without moving the plant around.

When growing outdoors in Canada daylight hours are REALLY long. So my hope is the autoflower cannabis will make this MUCH easier.

A B O U T M E:
Ashley is a soil scientist who has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are YouTube, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s YouTube channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her YouTube channel as well as her reach to up-and-coming gardeners.

Looking killer so far👌👍 I always transplant em and use them mikrobe🤷microbes care pack(4diff packs)you suggested a while back, and I never get transplant shock,it’s always my watering and feeding,or the lighting & environment that stresses the autos the worst. Daz got them goodgood genetics, you got this girl👍🤙

I’ve done autos both ways, i.e., starting in the final pot and starting in solo then transplanting to final pot. I’ve seen no ill effects of transplanting, although I do sprinkle mikorhizza on the root ball as well as in the hole. Also, with a lanky or stretchy plant, it’s fine to bury deeper into the soil. The stem will throw additional roots after a few weeks.

Cannabis is a hot topic for a soil scientist with how big and profitable of an industry it is as it becomes legal like in the US for example. people who want to consume cannabis for recreational or medicinal reasons probably don’t want auto-flowering cannabis due to the hemp (cannabis rideralis) genetics which lead to the auto-flowering trait. If you live in a suitable climate and plant according to season, outdoor non autoflowering plants should flower on their own without an issue via natural seasonal light cycle progressions. “Living soil” is all the rage these days as things go corporate and people want sustainable sungrown natural product and to try and do it themselves as rock-wool and hydroponic indoor cultivation is debunked from being a superior cultivation method. If someone isn’t intending to use cannabis for purposes beyond cosmetics and bath bombs then auto-flowering makes perfect sense and saves time and effort I’m sure.

Autos do good in 2 gallon for the first 2 weeks with humidity dome then 5 gallon or more pail . I’m on my 3rd run in Regina all greenhouse. 600 grams wet was my last harvest on a single plant

  8. Brandon Best on October 18, 2023 at 10:34 am

I’ve never done autoflowers.. but if I was up where you are.. I might consider differently. I’ve always done photos. I do the same things ( with a few exceptions) across my whole garden and greenhouse.. and a few outdoor plants. I just simply give cannabis a little extra care, a little more then the rest. What is gentle* and works well for cannabis.. I often downgrade the recipe and use it on many houseplants.. for example.. and aloe vera soil soak/foliar spray. Cannabis seems to "lead" my garden.. and it’s also taught me alot about what other plants like.. but usually the same things work well… but I simply use less on other plants.. Cannabis is a heavy feeder.

These things stinks. My neighbor growing a couple plants outside, they are huge and the scent is so strong it gives me a headache. My neighbor and I can’t use the outside and kids can’t play outside due to the strong scent. Not everything is conducive for small urban setting. People need to be considered of others and know that not everyone wants to be living in such strong scent daily

    New subscriber here so Greetings!
Anyhow, might i suggest you give a light watering and only keep it out of sunlight for one day. Autoflower’s are very hardy, but your root system is far to small. Id suggest one day of indirect light and then straight into the sun. Only give a bit of water to allow the roots to chase the water but still enough that they can expand. 3 days after transplant id give a full watering.
(This is just how I’d do it with an Autoflower at the stage of yours)
I see you are an experienced grower so my comments are only a recommendation.
    Coming from Waterloo Ontario!

I’ve found that not transplanting autoflowers works better. Start it in the final pot, or start it in a plantable bio cup( coco coir) before the roots start to break through. Autos stress very easily when it comes to the roots and you only have so many days of growth. Don’t want to waste them with plant recovery

Auto flowers should be planted in there final container from the beginning, most auto flowers will only grow a few sets of leaves before going into the stretch process of the flowering stage , it’s lifespan is so fast that transplant shock & stress from up potting is bad hence starting the seed in its final container from the beginning

So I’ve been growing for the last 3ish years, fellow Canadian grower as well !!! I started with autoflowers indoors so I can not speak how they’d do outdoors as I have not dabbled with that way yet, but what I have learned and this is just some helpful and friendly advice not giving any flack or saying one way is better than another, just the way I’ve done autos indoors is start 1 seed per container, about a half inch down in the middle of the pots, and I’d also suggest starting the germinated autoflower seed in the final pot you wish to have it in, those autos can be finicky but it’s all part of the learning process!! also when planting in it’s final pot water in slowly around the seed / ontop of the seed and gradually increase how wide around the seed you water and how much you water it. 🙂 Hope this info helps you in you’re future of growing!

  26. Lemonentory on October 18, 2023 at 10:56 am

I recommend 20 hours light 4 hours darkness, use ferts like biobizz, the flowers come early with autoflowers as they are determinate so to speak, Happy growing :o)

I think autos are supposed to be put in the pot they are going to grow in because transplanting is to much stress on a time sensitive plant

Hi….thank you for all ur videos and sharing ur knowledge of all soils.
Question…… it’s totally of today’s topic……… I would like to have some nice, mid tall grasses but I think most of those need more months of sun and heat. I’m in the very south of Southern Ontario and this yr I’ve paid attention to the sun and how it moves.
And, could u tell me, if u know about heucheras, the purple ones r so beautiful and I really want some in my garden.

If I’ve made a mistake in asking u under a different topic, I apologize.
I just love ur videos and trust what u tell us completely.
    Thank you so much….. Marion

  31. Ek-cannabis on October 18, 2023 at 11:02 am

Um 😐 why are you pulling it out of the soil like that to transplant that stresses and rips roots that’s a very inaccurate way to teach people to do this

I have been growing auto flowers for a few years from seeds here in Ohio. Outdoors in my garden. I soak the seeds for 12 to 24 hours, plant in small pots, outdoors in warmth. They pop up in 2 days. Then i grow them outdoors for a couple weeks, then directly into the garden, last year some were massive plants and some were not. I don’t know why a couple of mine flowered when they were small, and some grew absolutely massive before flowering.

  35. cb.growmie on October 18, 2023 at 11:04 am

yikes! This video is pretty bad. auto flowers should be put in the final container from the beginning. Even if that wasn’t the case your transplanting was so bad it caused me physical pain to watch it. please for the love of god do 10 minutes of research on here.

The autos ive been growing need a deep pot. 5 gallons minimum. When the roots have no more space to grow then the plant goes to flower, or else around day 30 . My 5 gallon pots for autos get me a harvest of 4 oz dry , minimum. Only in 30 days of veg and they flip and then 7 weeks flower done. Revolver is the auto im talking about, white widow X NYC diesel . I never transplant.

  39. Joey on October 18, 2023 at 11:08 am

All those free seeds, you made out good! What are you doing with the ones you didn’t use?

  40. Yotaciv on October 18, 2023 at 11:08 am

Thats a poor seedling. Medium low, indirect air flow and 10-12 000 lux of 4000K led light at canopy at least 18h per day. I do red solo cups with holes stabbed in bottom, hp pro mix, and 2-3 tbsp of worm castings mixed into bottom of solo cup.
Transplant after 10-14 days from emergence of Cotyledons. The whole cup should be a root ball mass.

Soak seed 12-18 hours till they sink, then a wad of moist paper towels on a plate till they germinate and at 1/4” radicle I put in soil above^.

  41. Mark Kindell on October 18, 2023 at 11:09 am

The easiest way to start seed is put them between moist toilet paper and put on plastic tray on top of your hot water cylinder and keep moist ,thay will show a tap root in 2 or 3 days ,then plant

  42. Keith Spear on October 18, 2023 at 11:10 am

Hi, What’s the deficiency showing on the bottom leaves?

  43. Don Lowery on October 18, 2023 at 11:11 am

They don’t do well with transplanting unlike their photo period varieties. They generally are not nearly as powerful but can be . Great tip is to start it in the same size container as you plan to finish in . Most of them do grow vegetatively for 3 weeks maby 4 and then begin to flower. They also do best under 18 to 20 hours of light and 4 to 6 hours of darkness as short rest period. They don’t require much nutrition in the early stages but require some in flowering. It all depends upon the genetics of course. They generally dont have the same terpenes as their photo period relatives. But the breeding has come a long way since they first cane out . One last tip is they push deeper tap roots as you noticed compared to photos and love deeper taller containers. To harden off just place them in partial shade for a few days and they will adjust quickly . If you want less smell than go with a northern lights or something with less terpenes. However terpenes are very important in the way cannabis works and effects you. Also water before planting the seeds so the seeds dont get washed down too far into the soil. Mafisto genetics have some of the best autos out there as well just for reference

  44. Tony Palmer on October 18, 2023 at 11:11 am

At the price paid for some seeds, you don’t want to chance it. Once my seeds have pushed the tap root out I try to stick with tweezers. Hands free of oil that may affect germination.

  45. The Honest Hoser on October 18, 2023 at 11:11 am

For cannabis seeds don’t plant them so deep. You’ll probably have a better germination rate if you crack them in a paper towel and transplant taproot down. Wait for the tap root to grow to around 1/2". Look up crop king seeds germination technique. Maybe go a little easier on the transplant next time. That was hard to watch.

I knew you were cool with cannabis. I’ve been studying that plant daily for 3 years. I’m glad to see a new video on the subject. I’m in the really advanced stages of growing and more videos for advance growers would be appreciated. 99 percent of YouTube videos are videos for beginners. The place is flooded. So some advance classes once in a while would be greatly appreciated. I know u can come up with some stuff.
Let’s delve deeper into the rabbit hole.

  47. Maine Girl Grows on October 18, 2023 at 11:15 am

Hey thanks for the shout out! ♥️ Plant in the final pot. 3-5 gal 😉 You can go bigger but it isn’t necessary. The plant I showed you was in a 3 gal. Soak the night owls or put between moist paper towels in a bag to hold the moisture. Once you see the tap root coming out, plant in its final pot. Don’t transplant. The plant that’s flowering will continue to flower. It will still get slightly bigger but not much most likely. NightOwl is a great breeder. Top notch genetics. I always plant after I see a tap root. I want to know the seed is viable before I put it in the dirt. NightOwl should be able to handle what you’d normally do for food. But autos don’t always need as much food. Feel free to message me on IG for more tips and tricks! Thank you again!
