30 Things You Need to Throw Away from Your House

According to the National Association of Professional Organizers, we spend at least 1 year of our lives looking for stuff. So why do we hold on to things? The answer is simple. Not everything comes with an expiration date. So, we’re unsure when we should get rid of old items. But, ditching things that we no longer use can help us maximize space and improve productivity.

To help yourself declutter, you have to follow one simple rule. Chuck away anything you haven’t used in the past two years. Now, don’t go around putting everything in boxes. That’ll create a huge mess. Instead, do one item at a time!

SUMMARY:
– The only reason to keep single socks is if you’re looking to get crafty and upcycle them.
– People put a lot of pride and effort into creating their movie collections, but with the push of a button, you can transfer all of them on to a hard-drive.
– Show your hair some love. It’s better to invest in a few good quality hairbands than having a 100 of them constantly breaking.
– We hold on to our spices in case we need to give our dishes some extra flavor. But, we keep them way too long.
– Razors that are kept in a moist environment tend to get rusty twice as fast. Shaving with rusty razors can cause burns and skin infections.
– There are places you can take your plastic bags and recycle them, putting an end to the ever-growing mass.
– Skincare products that are rarely used are a great source of bacterial growth. So, it’s safer for your skin if you get rid of them.
– Things like colored pens and little note pads make us feel more organized. But the ones that’ve been sitting in your drawer can be donated.
– The truth is, most of us have a few favorite coffee mugs. The rest of them sit in a cupboard collecting dust.
– There are better ways to remember your adventurous vacation than holding on to tiny shampoo and soap bottles from the hotel you stayed in.
– Unless you’re an electrician or an engineer who can get inventive with their old power cords, there’s no reason to keep them.
– If you still have the receipt from the take-out place you ate lunch at a week ago, then you know what to do.
– This is a huge mistake! There are many things that can go wrong with old prescription medication, so it’s better to get rid of them.
– Take-out menus are like emergency service phone numbers. But with all the take-out places having their menus online, there’s no reason to keep them.
– If your loofah is more than a month old, it should be replaced. As time progresses, they get dirtier.
– Whether it’s a keyboard waffle maker or a normal toaster that you’ve used once, don’t hold on to it. Some appliances are more trouble to use than to not.
– If your bathroom towels begin to feel like cardboard boxes, this is a sign that they’ve reached their lifespan.

Old calendars can make a great crafting projects so put them in your crafting drawer because they have a lot of pretty pictures you can reuse them and turn them into cards yes I sound like a cheapskate but I don’t care keep your calendars for the pictures and you can use them to make homemade cards grab some construction paper put the pretty picture on there glue it and there you go you got yourself a beautiful greeting card.

If you are a birder or know someone who is, old notebooks are perfect for listing and counting birds and then entering the info into eBird.

  7. DEE SMITH on October 23, 2023 at 11:30 am

Well it depends on what it is some things you only use every couple of years it just really depends on what it is so you can’t just go by that as a rule it totally depends on what it is and what it’s for close I can understand.

  8. Amanda Smith on October 23, 2023 at 11:32 am

Quite honestly a lot of these really weren’t worth the discussion. That stuff really wouldn’t make a difference in my life

  14. Maggie Matthews on October 23, 2023 at 11:41 am

If I may just point out … that spice you mentioned is tuRmeric not "toomeric". That’s "tuR" as in turtle, turkey or turbo. TURmeric.

I don’t need to recycle my plastic bags because I saved them because I used them all of them for my kitty litter I put them in the bottom of my litter genie so then when I go to take out the trash when the litter genie is full it doesn’t make a big mess so I have a very practical use for them and I do use them quite a bit. Or they’re also handy if for the moment you’ve run out of trash bags and they are great little trash bags for when you’re cleaning up your house and don’t want to open a big garbage bag for just a few items and then you just toss it in the trash so I can find great practical uses for them

  16. Gina Sizemore on October 23, 2023 at 11:42 am

Sheets blankets pillows and wash cloths can all go to the animal shelters! They will usually take rugs too

I have to keep my receipts for my mother because she does a yearly report for social security disability so I have to keep my receipts so don’t tell me to throw out my receipts because I have to save them for my mother or she’ll have a cow haha.

  22. DEE SMITH on October 23, 2023 at 11:46 am

I like to travel and you can always reuse those small shampoo and conditioner bottles because you don’t want to take a giant one on vacation so empty them out once you’ve used them rinse them put them in a safe place then when you go on a trip you don’t have to go buy the travel size to me that makes more sense to keep it because once it’s used up or if it starts getting old you just wash it out put it in a safe place that you know where you’ll find it then the next time you go on a trip you have them and you don’t have to go buy them it saves a lot of space in your suitcase it makes sense to keep them just like the cell phones. The socks the unmated socks some of them yes you can throw out that have holes and things but when I buy socks I only buy one type I buy the diabetic socks even though I’m not a diabetic cuz it helps with pain and inflammation and they’re more comfortable and I get them for free through my insurance company. When they’re worn throw them out but if you can’t find a mate for another one it’s the same socks so why throw it out. Batteries you can actually recycle and get money I don’t have the money to do it right now cuz you have to buy a big bucket special bucket and then you ship them to the battery recycle company and you can get money for them so yeah. Just depends on how you look at it.

  23. Linda Thompson on October 23, 2023 at 11:46 am

    Excellent

  24. Tere Fredericks on October 23, 2023 at 11:47 am

Never, ever, ever throw away expired medicine or supplements. Ask if your pharmacy will dispose of them for you. Plus, never stop taking your medication because you feel better. Take all of it. Always.

I wish I still had my plastic bags from the grocery store, because you rarely get them any more. I used them for trash bags, especially when cleaning kitty litter. I used them when deep conditioning my hair. Now I have to pay to get single use bags.

    Upcycling clothing is fun!

The old hair ties my cats take care of, I constantly buying new once because the they all disappear in one way or the other.

  29. Michael Fleming on October 23, 2023 at 11:54 am

Everything we no longer use should be tossed.

  30. DEE SMITH on October 23, 2023 at 11:58 am

No I do not get rid of my medication because most of it is painkillers and I make sure that I have plenty of anti-inflammatories because half the time I can’t find them and migraine pills and all of that and yes I say the prescriptions I don’t care as long as it’s within the same year or within the expiration date keep it you might need it after the expiration date throw it out why would I just throw that out it doesn’t make any sense and I reuse the prescription bottles and I use them to put things in that I might need so I may sound like a hoarder but I’m not I’m a cheapskate and if you can find a use for something you use it you don’t just throw it out.

  31. JShawnPaul on October 23, 2023 at 12:00 pm

Looking for things is probably one of my top five stresses in life. That’s why I put things away when I’m done using them. I’ve always been like this since I was a kid

I have more lids than bottoms

  34. Esther Chandy on October 23, 2023 at 12:02 pm

    1. Edible items can be removed from their packaging and composted
    2. Ditto for cardboard
    3. Towels can be cut and used as washcloths to do dishes. Much better than stinky sponges. I have a dozen tiny wash cloths, with machine hemmed edges that once my day is over is used to wipe my counter tops, rinsed and then dried overnight. Next morning it goes in the wash.
A new waah cloth every day… Each is about 6 to 8 inches square.
    3.

  35. Cathy Glober on October 23, 2023 at 12:03 pm

Why get rid of clothes that fit? I rarely buy new clothes because I “shop” in my own closet each season.

  36. Gamerboy on October 23, 2023 at 12:05 pm

you can use broken hair elastics and tie them together

  37. Romeoslover on October 23, 2023 at 12:05 pm

expired meds and supplements should not be thrown away in your regular trash. they are hazardous waste materials. that need to be disposed of properly. My county has take back days, and the pharmacies have bins.

  38. Grace Jackson-Seivwright on October 23, 2023 at 12:06 pm

Clothes that have not been worn for two years or more…even if they still fits.

All who watch are mosyly hoarders. But they have point. Just dont turn your house into a one man habitat which even your guest or children who comes to visit live in a suitcase because they have no place to put their stuff.

    I love wearing unmatched socks.

  41. Smileysue74 on October 23, 2023 at 12:10 pm

Let’s just throw everything away. Most things can be repurposed but people would rather not take responsibility for all the junk they bought but didn’t need Like 5 min crafts, bright side videos offer no useful info Let’s just close down all libraries and throw away all the books ever written while we are at it
