Starting a pot business in California: A cautionary tale | The Green Room

What’s it like to be a craft cannabis cultivator trying to grow legal weed in California? There are probably as many different answers to — and stories about — that as there are pot farms across the Golden State. And one of those stories belongs to Lex Corwin, the 28-year-old founder and Chief Executive of Stone Road Farms, a brand that’s got its headquarters in Venice just steps from the Pacific Ocean and a cluster of greenhouses 400 miles due north on a remote Nevada City hilltop.

how can you possibly justify 7 million gallons of water per crop? 7000 plants times 1000 gallons per plant (estimated by the grower)

this guys doing everything wrong. over nutrients driving the plants too hard. over watering because the ground is too hot because hes using no mulch or stone mulch. using full synthetic probably polluting the river. hes talking about how it sucks the groundwater isnt recharging but is bulldozing all his land to fill with gravel and kill off his soil and water retention.

I kind of wonder what the impact of legalization in Thailand will have to the US cannabis industry in coming years. While Northern California may have an ideal climate for growing when there’s enough water for irrigation, Thailand has an entire country conducive to year-round growth. Are we looking at tons of legal imports in the future?

  26. @DavidWoods-rk8st on January 2, 2024 at 9:23 pm

    Phewweeeeeee

  27. @scottkaercher1733 on January 2, 2024 at 9:23 pm

In the next 5yrs California isn’t gonna have any water to cannibas. The water is only gonna be used for household’s.

👆👆👆look up that handle….We all agree that e-cigarettes are significantly less harmful than smoking. One in two lifelong smokers dies from their addiction

  34. @careymoulder4087 on January 2, 2024 at 9:32 pm

Cannabis takes about 2 and a half acre ft per year of water. Almons are about 6 acre feet per year.

  42. @timsfgiantsmem9382 on January 2, 2024 at 9:39 pm

    You grow Outdoor B grade

  43. @CThaKid6 on January 2, 2024 at 9:40 pm

Basically you gotta be rich and white to start your own cannabis business. Fucc corporate cannabis this system wasn’t made for struggling minorities who’ve went to jail for selling weed who were just trying to support their families who’ve faced discrimination. Legalization is a joke. Decriminalize yes

  44. @healedbynature. on January 2, 2024 at 9:41 pm

Nothing small or boutique about 1,000-7,000 plants.

  47. @hughjassol2072 on January 2, 2024 at 9:42 pm

A smart businessman would be growing out of state and selling in CA.

  48. @420kushmaster on January 2, 2024 at 9:43 pm

good luck the taxes and license fees are squeezing the legit folks with unnecessary facility requirements. the big tobacco companies are moving in with umbrella companies. plus outdoor buds suck compared to indoor. this guys stuff is ok to make bubble hash that’s about it. when they start regulating the water it won’t be worth it to make a profit. plus Nevada County has stabbed hundreds of growers in the back the last 10 years. that’s why so much properties for sale.

  49. @briandougherty481 on January 2, 2024 at 9:43 pm
