Why Canada's Cannabis Industry is Going Up in Smoke

Matt Lamers covers the business of cannabis for MJBizDaily. He takes us into the (shady?) story of Aleafia’s insolvency, and explains why so many businesses are struggling. You’ll be surprised to hear how cannabis stacks up to beer revenue-wise, and how Indigenous communities are being frozen out by the Cannabis Act.

The industry is so heavily regulated as to purposely engineered to fail financially. From the extreme packaging costs at the producers end and the extreme costs of setting up the retail outlets there is not enough profit to succeed and aid in the so called war on the illegal trade whose costs are managed into profit

This is because those of us who have been fighting for legalization for decades, no one listened to us (the experts) and set up a horrible system. Meanwhile, there is a liquor store on every corner.

Legalization is working great for me. Weed shops are everywhere in my neighborhood full of unbelievably strong and cheap cannabis. I get I’m in probably one of the most concentrated areas in the country (Edmonton Whyte Ave area) and they are probably having a price war. I can easily get an ounce for 100 bucks at 30% THC from nearly a dozen shops within a five to ten minute drive. Not sure what happened in the rest of the country but I’m in heaven lol.
