Cannabis: Thailand Wants to Ban Recreational Marijuana

The days of legal recreational cannabis use in Thailand may soon be coming to end, barely two years after it became the first South East Asian country to decriminalize the drug. The Thai Cabinet will review a draft law this month with an aim to ban recreational use by the end of the year, impacting thousands of businesses. Bloomberg’s Paul Allen reports.

instead of adapting the law and creating a few new clear regulations, they just press the shut down button – as a result, ppl loose their income, million-dollar industry is canceled and investors are gone. how disappointing is that?

Legal recreational use is probably hurting the alcohol and tobacco market. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

There are public health reasons for proposing a ban on recreational marijuana use, but such a measure could lead to unintended consequences. For example, medical or authorized patients might leak their products to tourists, potentially increasing illegal activity and creating dangers associated with drug trafficking. Additionally, both tourists and residents, when denied legal access, might resort to obtaining unregulated and potentially more potent products. This could lead to increased interactions with potentially dangerous individuals on the street and create tensions between police and tourists. Therefore, a more nuanced approach may be necessary before implementing a full ban. Perhaps a partial ban could be considered as an initial step. Banning recreational marijuana use altogether could create as many problems as when it was fully banned worldwide, and this does not sound good like a good idea at all, and i’m not saying that marijuana is an entirely harmless drug without it’s risks, although cigarettes are plain simply harmful and do not serve purpose, red wine and some few selection of wines with small amounts of alcohol is tolerated by the body and can be consumed in moderation, hard liquors, i would recommend against, as much you wouldn’t like a too high potency product for the first time, since it’s unpredictable effects and health effects may not be necessarily determined by dosing and any amount of dosing could cause a person to feel effects that are too intense for the first timer.

Expect a big pushback from industry leaders, growers and people in general soon. This will be reversed.

  14. @doxskew2221 on March 22, 2024 at 6:05 am

The problem here isnt them banning the weed. Its the fact that they made it legal. Introducing weed as a recreational thing only to make it illegal so. People will still use and it will just become an underground market

  15. @FoFo-gm2iv on March 22, 2024 at 6:05 am

I just came back from bkk, most of those businesses are barely surviving !

Banning weed means nothing! As simple as that

If they close stores you can buy it online with free delivery

"…but not at the expense of public health."
What evidence do you have to suggest Recreational Marijuana use is worse for you then Alcohol and Cigarettes!? In fact everything shows the opposite.
Sure its not great for your lungs to smoke anything. But show me a report of anyone dying from Marijuana use.
Or anyone with Lung Cancer from Marijuana use only. I will wait…

  27. @user-mind-body on March 22, 2024 at 6:20 am

They say cannabis lead to other drugs, which is a lie. That is a topic easy to research, but the Thai gov is totally backwards and can’t seem to understand logic. A big disappointment, they could have lead Asia into a better, more financial stable future.

  33. @maxmustermann7794 on March 22, 2024 at 6:26 am

Legalizes, builds up an even bigger economy around it, not only the black market, then illegalizes recreational use because "oh no the kids are gonna smoke". So you basically said we decriminalize it, still kind of do, but now everyone below the age of becoming an adult is going to buy laced black market shit where who knows what’s inside. But alcohol and tobacco are still allowed recreationally.
Big brain move right there Thailand.

  34. @user-wv4fw2cg5b on March 22, 2024 at 6:29 am

    Noooo! ๐Ÿ˜ญ

  36. @CoreySorensen on March 22, 2024 at 6:30 am

coming from years of experience, Thailand needs to understand people will get Cannabis regardless of if it’s legal or not that’s why the black market exists. Teenagers are better off smoking Cannabis than drinking alcohol & it’s also a lot safer, teenagers are vulnerable under the influence of Alcohol.
