Ontario's small cannabis retailers say new government regulation could push prices higher

Small cannabis retailers are calling on the Ontario government to reconsider recent changes to industry rules that some businesses fear could crush mom-and-pop operations in the province.

In a New Year’s Day regulation, the Ontario government increased the cap on the number of stores a licensed company can operate in the province from 75 to 150.

According to the province, the change was designed to “further support a healthy and competitive” cannabis industry in Ontario.

Independent retailers, however, fear the change will only benefit a select few businesses that are already beginning to dominate the fledgling cannabis industry.

Global’s Colin D’Mello has more.

I’ve been paying $10 for a dimebag of weed my entire life. No inflation, no market fluctuations. Only after gov pokes its finger into the industry does the cancer begin. We can grow our own and pick-up from our personal dealers. Your "capitalism" will never infect this industry.

They’ll be closing shops because most of us will go back to our cheaper Street Vendors!
Feel sorry for the shop owners!..😔!

Ontario: Open for business? Open for monopolies.

For what matters, the whole “cannabis industry” could collapse…more over, I would be more than happy if all the stores close!! Better for the health of our people, especially the children who even if unintentionally, they are the most vulnerable to it!!

Maybe Global News could figure out that if everyone, (not just government licensed companies), was allowed to grow their own marijuana, (like any other agricultural crop), the prices would plunge considerably. What the provincial and federal governments have done is create regulations that really only treat marijuana as a "recreational drug" ( as most alcohol is regulated as a beverage). Government taxes are what they are after. If I grew my own crop, it isn’t taxed. Imagine the nonsense if similar regulations restricted the sale of mushrooms, only allowing "magic mushrooms" to be grown and sold by licensed companies, heavily taxed, and severe penalties for anyone growing any other mushrooms or using them for food. Bureaucratic greed!

Getting the weed business out of local dealers hands one regulation at a time.
