Danish Hippie Commune Seeks to Shut Down Cannabis Sales
Residents of a hippie commune in Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen, are seeking an end to cannabis sales after recent violence.
Freetown Christiana is a neighborhood in Copenhagen where recreational cannabis has been allowed despite it being outlawed in the rest of Denmark.
The self-governed community has become a major tourist attraction in Copenhagen, in part because of its exception to the country’s cannabis laws.
But now residents are looking to stop the cannabis trade. According to Forbes, they’ve gone as far as constructing blockades to close off entrances used by drug traffickers.
The response from residents follows last weekend’s deadly drug-related shooting, the fourth such incident since 2020.
Freetown Christiana put out a press release suggesting it needs help closing down “Pusher Street,” a central point for drug activity in the neighborhood.
“One offer for a solution is a state-regulated market. But we can’t wait for that. The political process is slow and the gangs act quickly and brutally,” Christiana wrote.
It seems that there’s always someone who will take advantage a situation and spoil a good thing. 😢
