Who will get new cannabis dispensary licenses in Maryland?

Saturday marks just the start of Maryland’s new recreational cannabis law, and there’s already an eye on the future of the industry. Maryland currently has awarded 100 dispensary licenses across the state. In the fall, the state will start accepting applications to allow hundreds more licenses. The new dispensaries given the chance to open will come from a specific group. “That initial round is exclusively for social-equity applicants — those individuals who have lived or gone to school in parts of the state that were disproportionately harmed by the criminalization of cannabis,” said Will Tilburg, acting director of the Maryland Cannabis Administration. In order to sell cannabis to more than just medical patients, dispensary owners had to pay sizeable fees to convert their licenses. The money made from those conversions will go back into communities impacted by social inequities.
