Left my career to take care of my dad with Alzheimer’s 8 years ago. He’s still kicking and strong, but I dread the day I’ll have to go back to the job market. I feel like I’ll be so out of touch with the new reality in the business that I might have to change careers altogether.
I took time off to raise my kid up to kindergarten age before going back to school to resume work life in a new career field. Since nothing before that is relevant anyway, I pretend my freelance editing and illustration work during those 5 years was much more of a regular thing than it was. In reality I was posting art videos here, reviewing books on my blog, and sometimes someone would commission art or hire me to give their manuscript a critical read through.
What a ridiculous load of rubbish… stop looking at ppl’s resumes like this. Life is short ppl are on a journey, jobs aren’t real, money is fake. Get over it.
I’ve been working since i left high school, and my older brother hasnt worked since he left 10 years ago. I feel like at this point, he wasted his chances at getting jobs.
Could they not just have been a stay at home parent why are you judging so hard no one I know who’s been in jail that long actually looks for a job and at that they won’t be looking for a law job 😒 but I’m just a house wife with a family full of gang members so what do I know 😂 some of us did different stuff like being involved parents ur so mean for thinking like that if they were in jail and they are applying for jobs why wouldn’t you give them a chance if they are trying to do better that’s real shit dude
I’m taking a couple years to try and see if I can make it as an author while I have a very supportive wife who makes enough for us to live on while I try and follow my dream. I feel like this is an unacceptable reason lol.
I remember when one interviewer asked me about a 3 MONTH GAP in my resume. It was literally the gap between when i finished college internship and my first job lol
I started a business in my early 20s. It was incorporated under a really generic name. It folded, but I quickly realized that having that business meant that I could use it fill gaps in my resume if they got too large.

Sorry, but no one has to justify him/herself to you man. Private life is exacly that, private. Ofc, you decide who to hire, and you can take things like that into account… But know, that you are being a dick.
I hate that anyone gives a shit about a gap. It’s even worse that they assume I’m a criminal for it. Life happens. Especially in this shitty country. What a crappy take.
Sometimes there is no good explanation though. I worked as a dishwasher for a year and a half. Went to college and dropped out. Went through every retail job i could for two years after.
So, that two years, how do you explain "I was applying for everything in the wrong field" in such a way that looks appealing to you?
my resume has no gaps 15 years straight experience and over qualified for all jobs i apply to 3 page resume and 1 page cv and still cant even get a phone call
i think this is all bullshit tbh ppl’s private lives should be private, but i work in medical so i have a lot more leeway than most people when it comes to refusing to answer intrusive questions during interviews since there’s not a whole lot i can say to keep them from hiring me.
Back during the 2008 Great Recession, I was laid off and could not find a job to save my life. Being overqualified was a particularly onerous snub to receive when I got a response at all. I went nearly a year and a half before I got called in for an interview, and I was asked to explain the time discrepancy. I looked at the guy with a "You’re kidding me" look before realizing he wasn’t and told him why, to which he responded with, "That’s an acceptable answer for some of that time, but not for the rest." Needless to say, I didn’t get the job, but thankfully I did a month or so later thanks to a friend who vouched for me.
If there’s a question about the gaps in my resume maybe you shouldn’t make assumptions! Doing so makes your company suspect! Are you you someone that I want to help make money?
My last 2 jobs i swore it would be my last place and I’d grow to accommodate the company. Now I’m with a company I swear will be my last company. They’re a great company!
But I’m also an entrepreneur.
People can do multiple things at once
Yeah that’s a you issue. As an employer myself, gaps in resumes are not any of our business to inquire about. Move on and look at their actual skill set not where they’ve been or why they left.
I’ve been jumping job to job pretty frequently. I could have stayed at most of the jobs I was working at but I’m young and I feel like now is the best time to try out as many jobs as possible cause I definitely don’t want to be doing that when I’m 40. Would I have been better off working as a merchandiser for 6 years? Maybe. But I honestly feel like getting the breadth of knowledge from 10 different jobs makes me a better candidate.
I had a interview where they asked why you keep job hopping
Well because the next job gave me more money the only reason why we work
Where i am now i have been 4 now 5 years why becuase they have given me the most money
I have reviwed resumes before. And no I don’t care about the years gap in your resume or your history. All I cared about was who had the most qualifications and experience, as tiebreaker criteria if they had any interest on anything we do. The last thing is asking if they want to work there for how much my boss wants to pay them.
This video just shows you are an asshole, as if you have ANY business knowing why someone has a gap on their resume, but you go as far as to assume why that is, and that it must mean they shouldn’t be considered for the position, you lost all respect I had for you in this single video, but I still hope you will rethink your ways, and learn how stupid you are being.

Wait, are you recommending explaining that in the resume or on the cover letter?
Uhh Mike I WAS in JAIL
You suck at your job
What if I genuinely don’t have an explanation? Like I’ve been applying to a bunch of different positions and no one would hire me?
I had to say “I was under 18 and also in high school” when I got asked about the 4 years before my work experience
JAIL? MF I WAS LOOKING FOR A JOB

Looking at the comments, I can tell people are too detailed and/or too honest with their resumes! Lmao
I started a business in my early 20s. It was incorporated under a really generic name. It folded, but I quickly realized that having that business meant that I could use it fill gaps in my resume if they got too large.
Wouldn’t a background check clear all that up?

Ha, random iowa namedrop. I live in Iowa, i like it.
I hate that anyone gives a shit about a gap. It’s even worse that they assume I’m a criminal for it. Life happens. Especially in this shitty country. What a crappy take.
That’s why I only list the starting year for each new job.
Abducted by aliens
stupid.
I signed an nda.

Just lie
I had someone say this to me and I was like “I got fired due to Covid dude. Jobless for two years.”
Like it’s not any of their business.
my resume has no gaps 15 years straight experience and over qualified for all jobs i apply to 3 page resume and 1 page cv and still cant even get a phone call
Thats when I went to yale. Great you’re hired! Perfect, I really needed this yob.

Hey it’s literally none of your business what I do with my free time. Better yet why is your first thought jail? See how well you think of people
If there’s a question about the gaps in my resume maybe you shouldn’t make assumptions! Doing so makes your company suspect! Are you you someone that I want to help make money?
Cover letter?
Who cares if they went to jail
600 resumes and cant find a good employee. either thats a lie or this man may be the most illiterate lawyer to exist.
My last 2 jobs i swore it would be my last place and I’d grow to accommodate the company. Now I’m with a company I swear will be my last company. They’re a great company!

Bro, fastfood managers get background checked. If youre not checking backgrounds for criminal history thats on you
shouldn’t you ask for a criminal record then?
also, is not being accepted into uni twice a valid reason for a 2 year gap? asking for a friend😅
Yeah that’s a you issue. As an employer myself, gaps in resumes are not any of our business to inquire about. Move on and look at their actual skill set not where they’ve been or why they left.
Iowa jumpscare

Man next time I interview someone and theres a gap I’ll just straight ask them. "So what did you go to jail for"
Mike, are you spying on me perhamps?
Dawg.
These are human beings. Give someone the benefit of the doubt. Nobody is ever going to be a "perfect candidate," they have to grow into the role.

What about the horrid job market?
