Im growing my melons vertically. It eliminates all these issues with weeds.

I keep spiraling the vines around the plant. The shade helps keep the weeds down.

I normally set aside about eight feet of width for them, spread out some compost or mulch, then lay two strips of landscape fabric down on the area with a narrow gap between them. Plant the seeds in the gap, mulch the area around the plants and on top of the fabric when the plants are small. No weed issues serious enough to bother me. At the end of the season, I clear out the vines and the fabric and leave the mulch in place to break down and enrich the soil.
