Chris Casey: Cannabis Stocks Down 90% — The Ultimate Contrarian Bet?

Cannabis stocks are down 80–90% from their all-time highs, and most investors have walked away. But could that set the stage for one of the biggest contrarian trades in years? In this insightful interview, WindRock Wealth Management’s Chris Casey tells Maggie Lake why he believes the cannabis sector is now trading like a distressed asset in a high-growth market.

Despite being a $30B+ industry with widespread legalization in over 40 U.S. states, cannabis companies remain federally shackled by restrictive tax rules, blocked banking access, and a ban on interstate commerce.

🚨 But that may be about to change. Two major catalysts could rewrite the entire investment case:
1. Federal rescheduling of cannabis, removing it from Schedule I classification
2. The SAFER Banking Act giving financial institutions the green light to serve cannabis businesses

Key Topics:
– Why cannabis stocks crashed and what could turn them around
– The three federal-level obstacles crippling the industry
– How rescheduling and SAFER could unlock a wave of capital and efficiency
– The role of big alcohol, tobacco, and pharma in a post-legalization world
– Why Chris Casey sees this as a “call option on reform” with 2x to 6x upside for market leaders
– The M&A and consolidation potential when the floodgates open

Fluent Corp is a cannabis company under the radar. It has licenses and operations in New York, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Scotts Miracle Grows through its subsidiary Hawthorne Collective owns significant shares of Fluent.

Please do not take advice from someone who knows nothing about his own subject matter. When Cannabis is Federally legal, it will not be grown in Kentucky or Virginia, nor indoor under lights. The mass amounts will be grown in the high desert of the Southwest (5-7,000 ft altitude). It is a plant that is susceptible to mold when finishing, it needs extremely dry conditions with a strong sun, cool nights, hot days. There may be boutique farms in other places i.e. Northern CA, OR, WA etc. but the main body of production will come from an area where it grows best. Why citrus is grown where it grows best. Lastly, when it does go Fed legal, the big corps will dominate, mass produce in the Southwest and the current companies will go extinct.

Honestly, in Germany it’s out of the dangerous D law, and since then in the pharmacy I am feeling a extremely bargain during inflation times. My cost for spendings is the same as it was 3 years ago, just with a shift from canna to food and bills 😂

I always loved it to write covered calls at the 2$ range from Canopy & Tilray 😅 but the past year was extremely heavy if you don’t only buy the shares

While I agree that cannabis should at least be moved to Schedule III, it wouldn’t surprise me to see the DEA (on Trump’s input) move cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule II (i.e., a somewhat palatable compromise for many). It also wouldn’t surprise me to then see the Trump Administration delve publicly into the medical benefits of cannabis as prepared by, and under, the previous Democrat Administration, with an aim to possibly legalizing medical marijuana at the federal level. In other words, leverage all of the heavy lifting done by the previous Administration (but ultimately wasted) to arrive at an easily justifiable, defendable, and measured approach to reform that will appease a large spectrum of voters while offending very few. That should more than fulfill any campaign promise made – which many Governments fail at miserably these days – while complimenting many of the DEA’s recently announced priorities.

Politics, it’s always politics. Just seems unreal that you can walk into a bar, or restaurant and drink alcohol and get in your car and drive buzzed. Cannabis in the meantime is level 3 like the hardest drugs. All politics. Alcohol is also much worse than cannnabis, makes no sense.

  24. @bobskolski7102 on August 18, 2025 at 3:52 pm

Don’t do it folks. I have 35 years of growing experience and ran a grower supply company for almost 30 years. It’s a model that doesn’t work. Look at all the Canadian companies that are worthless now. You are only as good as your last crop. Plus in weed people never stick to the same brand of weed.
