Cannabis sales in Washington fall for 5th year amid oversupply and declining prices

Cannabis sales across Washington have been on a downward trend for five consecutive years, with no signs of stopping, according to the Washington Department of Revenue.

According to the Washington Liquor and Cannabis Board (WLCB), the decline in sales largely relates to an oversupply of cannabis, which has driven prices down and reduced overall revenue to pre-pandemic levels.

“The price of cannabis is going down, and the price of everything else is going up,” said Ocean Greens, owner of a north Seattle pot shop.

The Washington Department of Revenue reported that $277 million worth of cannabis was sold statewide in the first quarter of this year. That figure is nearly $100 million less than in 2021, when sales peaked during the pandemic. Additionally, statewide sales numbers show yearly cannabis sales have declined annually since 2021.

More people are realizing the higher potency dispensary grade THC can have more side effects/tolerability issues ( worsening mood/anxiety and psychosis).

In western Washington, I hardly see cannabis dispensaries.
I see them all over in Eastern Washington. Spokane has them on every corner, some across the street or next door to another dispensary.

  33. @joediverfl on August 24, 2025 at 4:03 pm

Once legal, weed became a commodity. That means everybody has roughly equivalent product, and a level playing field. Now, it’s simply and demand. This article is frivolous, as it fails to show total amount of weed sold year over year, which is what sales figures should show. There are related issues, such as the fact that if it became more expensive than before it was legal, Black market weed would dominate. Also, where weed becomes legal, there is no perceptible rise in drug related issues. The same number of people abuse it, just like alcohol. Alcohol is one of the deadliest addictions, killing many innocent people via drunk driving, or blazing tempers. Drugs should not have criminal penalties for using, that destroys ten times more lives than just using them.

  34. @gianwilliams8596 on August 24, 2025 at 4:03 pm

They need to drop the prices. Especially in Spokane.

  35. @tomford1611 on August 24, 2025 at 4:04 pm
