What Happens to Cannabis Stocks When Federal Legalization Hits? | TDR Podcast

What really happens to cannabis stocks if the U.S. fully legalizes marijuana?

On this episode of the Trade To Black podcast, host Shadd Dales and contributor Anthony Varrell break down the real implications of federal cannabis legalization — not just the headlines, but the market reaction investors should realistically expect.

While many retail investors assume legalization will cause cannabis stocks to skyrocket, the reality is more nuanced. The team explores what happens to multi-state operators (MSOs) like Green Thumb (GTII/GTBIF), Trulieve (TRUL/TCNNF), and Curaleaf (CURA/CURLF) in a post-legalization environment — from up-listing to U.S. exchanges, to increased institutional investment, and the potential for market consolidation.

But legalization also brings new competition, regulatory uncertainty, and pressure on margins as the industry scales.

This episode cuts through the noise and focuses on what investors actually need to watch for, including timing, political risk, and financial positioning.

Takeaway: Federal legalization isn’t a lottery ticket — it’s a reset. And how companies are positioned going in matters more than ever.

Great video and great live podcast yesterday! I am a blind investor maybe you 6:27 could list the 5 ticker symbols and company names on the chat. It’ll help me out.

  3. @Pala-t2p on August 29, 2025 at 3:46 pm

This comment section is filled with the dumbest people (pure speculators) on Earth. Aside from GTI, all these U.S. companies have piss-poor financials and terrible fundamentals – lots of debt and no tangible equity.

You’re the same clowns that’ll lose your shirt and then blame the stock market and/or the company because you’re too dumb and lazy to do some real analysis.

This reclass scenario will be interesting lol

I think the riots are good for MJ stocks?

  5. @AnxiousMartyr on August 29, 2025 at 3:49 pm

  6. @scottymoondogjakubin4766 on August 29, 2025 at 3:51 pm

In Indiana you can go to the liquor store and by alchohol and drink yourself to death but cannot use medical marijuana ! Indiana is so lame !

  12. @mike840 on August 29, 2025 at 4:01 pm

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Call it Cannabis not “weed”. 😕 if cannabis is rescheduled and banking is approved Trulieve will explode. But also Florida is stubbornly, fighting it tooth and nail against.

  13. @dmdizzle on August 29, 2025 at 4:05 pm

    i wont hold my breath

  14. @Zully-x5b on August 29, 2025 at 4:06 pm

Hey Shad, what are your thoughts on Jushi? It kind of flys under the radar because it’s smaller, but they seem to have strong financials and a good footprint in the limited license markets. Just wonder if they can survive amongst bigger MSO’s once legalization hits in whatever form…

  15. @torreyvent9429 on August 29, 2025 at 4:07 pm

Everybody get high, uncle sugar wants to help you.

  16. @pedinhuh16 on August 29, 2025 at 4:09 pm

You people legit cannot be serious to think that cannabis legalization is even in the cards at this point 😂😂😂😂

Didn’t you saw the GOP trying to delay schedule 3 even more today and possibly derail it entirely? They dont even want schedule 3, let alone full legalization.

I said this a month or two ago: Y’all are ignoring the signs of what is going to happen.

2026 will come, no S3 will be there, and MSOS will need to reserve split just so it won’t lose NASDAQ listing because huge chunks of the industry will be filling for bankruptcy, like 4Front just did today, AYR and Verano will be soon following it.

I’m just waiting for this month to be over so I will be selling.

And you gotta do something about your Trump Derangement Syndrome because at this point it’s getting embarrassing.

  17. @EddiePoe on August 29, 2025 at 4:11 pm

PRETTY SILLY to not include tilray as they are the largest international company.

  18. @JakeWestington on August 29, 2025 at 4:13 pm

GTI has 104 dispensaries across 14 states. Not 85 geeze.

Federal legalization… Not with idiots like Dan Patrick writing bills!

  31. @PrairieBoy1169 on August 29, 2025 at 4:24 pm

Tilray won’t pay TDR to talk about them.
    So TDR trashes TLRY

  32. @rickscarpello on August 29, 2025 at 4:24 pm

Good job and mentioning green thumb #1 but then you name its brands it’s acquired and you don’t name its biggest brand which is the biggest chocolate brand in America, incredibles. I created that brand and merged it with GTI in 2018 and it is a national large brand that that’s bigger than Beboe.

  33. @JamesChryst on August 29, 2025 at 4:26 pm

What do you think of Canopy
I think they are running the same moves as hexo just before hexo went out?

  34. @aobstudio2427 on August 29, 2025 at 4:27 pm

What are your thoughts on Innovative Industrial Properties, IIPR, they work specifically as a real estate venture in the field?

Down the road 10 years from now. Money controls politicians through K Street

  40. @datsie14 on August 29, 2025 at 4:35 pm

Planet 13 holdings is where my stake is. Been bag holding for the last 6 years. Soon as a I get a little profit or at least my money back somewhat I’m out. ITs too low right now to think about selling. So much time wasted the last 5 years compared to the broader markets performance. Needs to do something pretty big to say this was all worth it.

  41. @DatenschutzMartinProch on August 29, 2025 at 4:36 pm

Canadian Company like TILRAY are ready for US market and is in my opinion also a BlueChip company.. TLRY on nasdaq..😊

  42. @alexsolstice5394 on August 29, 2025 at 4:36 pm

  47. @mach1706 on August 29, 2025 at 4:40 pm

With the 60% threshold, Florida will not go recreational without adding home grow to the amendment. To many would be “yes” voters are very annoyed at the obvious monopoly play by Truelieve to try to control the whole market, and without home grow are downright defiant!
