Raw: Berlin Pro-Marijuana Protest Draws Thousands

(13 Aug 2016) More than 4,000 people marched through the German capital on Saturday in the 20th annual demonstration in support of the legalization of marijuana.
Under the banner “Legalization is in the air,” the demonstrators began the march at Berlin’s main train station and ended at City Hall.
Demonstrators were lobbying for the government to allow broad use of marijuana for medical purposes, expanded research of medical marijuana, and for a regulated marijuana market and end to the prosecution of consumers.
Marijuana is illegal in Germany, though possession of small amounts is tolerated by police, and a few hundred people have been given allowances to use it for medical purposes.
Police said the demonstration was peaceful and there were no reports of arrests.
