Core Knowledge Every Cannabis Budtender Should Know / Max Montrose / Green Flower

Outlining the essential information all budtenders should possess when interfacing with a wide spectrum of clientele – from medical patients to adult-use consumers – Trichome Institute’s Max Montrose makes the case for more comprehensive cannabis education and training in the retail sector.

As an example, he breaks down the process of how cannabis edibles work and are processed in the body – information that is often unclear or unknown to many budtenders and consumers, and as a consequence, results in unpleasant cannabis experiences.

During this Green Flower cannabis summit presentation, he also gives an unflinching state-of-the-industry assessment of the shortcomings in cannabis knowledge and education, plus criteria of what to look for when seeking high-quality cannabis educational programs.

Im in Az but what he says about colorado requiring licsense. I took their master electrician test and it is tuff. You have to take a test to be an apprentice. You would think they would have a test for you guys. The electrical test I took was open book, 4hrs and NOBODY can finish it in that time. Id think that standard would be normal.

In Canada currently in retail I as a budtender I am legally not allowed to give medical advice, yet every day I have multiple customers come in asking for medical treatment. Then there is the other end of customers that come in and all they want is high THC levels. Yet I know nothing about them and there illnesses or tolerances. Most of the time I am by myself and have to deal with multiple customers at once. The only certification I have is in retail, nothing about the actual cannabis plant it’s self, so I test as much products as I can so I can tell people how it effects me; with the follow up in it could be completely different experience for them though.

Hearing that smacking sound almost like you’re chewing gum while you’re talking is very annoying. I noticed this is a very common effect with particular Mics. It was so distracting I could not finish this video

Less regulation, more responsibility on the consumer. This is the only way forward.

What is this garbage–grow your own.

  11. Jack Sprat on March 19, 2021 at 10:29 pm

All the info you need to grow quality cannabis is online. If you have a garden with some privacy you can grow. If you have a closet you don’t need, you can grow,. A garage, a shed, an attic, a basement, a spare room – you can grow. And here’s the thing. The difference between cannabis strains, as long as they’re well grown and cured, isn’t that much different because most strains today have been hybridized so much there’s little significant difference. BUT! There is a BIG difference between pot you grow and cure carefully, organically and what you’re likely to get from your local pot shop which can’t afford to take the time and care you can. The start up costs if you grow out doors in raw (untended) ground probably will be around $200. In a verdant established garden the only necessary cost would be your seeds. You can find seeds online.

It is NOT a budtender’s job to be a medical consultant. That job belongs to those whom have studied herbology generally and cannabis specifically and how to use it for different conditions. AFTER one consults with a professional in this field, THEN one visits a budtender and tells them what their chosen approach is and how they wish to use cannabis. The budtender then uses his/her knowledge of the product under his/her care to provide the plant with the characteristics requested. Record keeping for each patient would be a wonderful assist in focusing in on the right strain for each person, and how each one affected the patient in the past. Budtenders are not physicians, nor are they expected to be such.

Yes there should be more training but this guy… give me a break, cannabis isn’t some new thing that nobody understands. There’s not some Huge difference between each strain. Edibles aren’t That complex, just looking online for two minutes would give the average user a good idea of how and why to ‘start low, go slow.’ This just seems like he’s trying to sell his courses.

At 15:30 he just starts assuming the Dudes have a low tolerance. "Don’t eat more, it’s coming." He just said it’s different from person to person and now he assumes it’s just taking one Dude to get the effects.

Plus, what are the supposed core pieces of information he’s blessing us with? Pretentious.

Give me a break! You’re not going to be sleeping through a concert, not enjoying it because you smoked some Bubba Kush! Fuckin Twat!!

  20. Med Otaku on March 19, 2021 at 10:40 pm

16:00 surprised that after saying all this he still promotes the idea that Sativa is "up" and indica is "down".

Turns out it’s one of those myths that only works if you believe in it.

The terpene profile determines effects, not sub species.

  21. Gabriella Morrow on March 19, 2021 at 10:40 pm

This needs to be heard at so so many dispensaries I’ve been to. I have heard, first and secondhand, some terrible budtending. You may as well asked them their favorite kind of bread and they named something random. They aren’t asking any questions. You can’t just say β€œwhat’s the best car for me” and expect an answer. I need to know, what’s your price range, do you want it good on gas, how many seats do you need, are you going to need 4 wheel drive, what’s your lifestyle like, how much driving do you do? People need to be willing to invest in a persons well being. You’re not selling a pack of gum at a gas station…. there needs to be more thought and connection within these interactions.

Budtender 101: you make minimum wage and tips. Stop acting like you’re better than everyone else.

  23. Sean D on March 19, 2021 at 10:41 pm

    Better than 2009?

Ha! You wish. Like all things, cannabis has been infested with corporate and bureaucratic douche lords making everything shittier.

  24. Thomas Nelson on March 19, 2021 at 10:43 pm

Do you think customers want to hear the difference between live resin and shatter? When you buy beer, do you ask the store clerk: do you know what process was used to make this beer and how it will effect me? Or do you expect the customer to know kind of what they are buying? Sativa vs Indica, not solvent base vs solventless process. And that’s why there is no "company standard." What company standard is there for selling beer or being a bartender?

  25. Ronnie Blasingame on March 19, 2021 at 10:43 pm

  26. Med Otaku on March 19, 2021 at 10:45 pm

    Nice commercial.

I’m pretty sure what we need is less barriers to entry, certifications, licenses, etc. Not more so you can make a killing inventing an unnecessary hoop to jump through.

It’s bad enough that people need a license to wash hair. Bullshit like that is based in greed and has never helped anyone.

  27. Professor Steve Greene on March 19, 2021 at 10:45 pm

When discussing the edibles it’s called first past metabolism wherein anything that is ingested orally passes through the liver and depending upon the compound, some or most of it is metabolized. You should have explained that better.

  28. Dat NOT Me on March 19, 2021 at 10:47 pm

Post signs, or maybe make flyers/ pamphlets at every dispensary. Customer can read em’ without training costly time to employees to explain. so many can read to learn. Cannabis will NOT kill ya.

Bruh these β€œdudes” from Texas should know not to eat the whole thing if they do they better not have any plans for a couple hours…. ive ate 500mg at once and i was good just baked out my mind

  30. Keyboard Warrior on March 19, 2021 at 10:50 pm

He just wants to sell you HIS course. The "Trichrome Institute" He wants more regulation & to not have "Dudes" be able to get there cannabis anymore. He doesn’t want a free market or free trade to make it legal for everyone. He want big pharma to have control so they can "dose you appropriately". Whatever THEY feel is appropriate. I’m sure "dose appropriately" from a "licensed person" from "Trichrome Institute" really means they just want to sell you half the quality, half the quantity & make billions if not trillions selling his "Trichrome Institute" licenses & becoming the leader cannabis regulation & licensing and getting in bed with big pharma. I don’t trust this guy at all… He says your going to end up in the hospital like a Beavis & Butt-Head "dude" like it’s a common thing. Well you can end up in the hospital because of vitamin pills or energy drinks or food so don’t give me that bullshit. I know people whos heart has stopped due to energy drinks and I don’t see the soda company being regulated by big pharmaceutical. No ones ever DIED off of a little or even allot allot allot allot of pot. Not to say that cannabis shouldn’t be tested by independent certified laboratory’s for heavy metals and PGR’s but it’ shouldn’t be turned over to 100% big pharma. 0% mom and dad. Geesh. MONSANTO who invented GMO’s just bought or is buying a huge cannabis farm and years ago they bought General Hydroponics and General Organics… More money more regulation 0% productive IMO.. I can appreciate regulations for human health. I just have many different options on how it should be done. It sounds like hes leaning towards almost a requirement for how much you can buy & in some states you can’t buy allot anyways and its taxed to the high heaven’s.

Sick of weed shops hiring any idiot off the street amd cslling them "Budtenders". They’re just cashiers that push whatever the manager needs to be sold. I have spent alot of time and money in my local shops. It isn’t better. It’s worse. Overlabeled trash, bad products, full of chemicals.

Shatter a cleaner product than live resin? Considering what most users put into shatter? Where would those waxes come in? Is LR not the same process with flower pulled immediately after harvest to maintain the terp profile?
