How To Grow Cannabis Outdoors. The Cannabis Growing Guide For Casual Growers | Gardening in Canada

Cannabis growing is a genre of plant care unto itself. However you can casually grow cannabis outside with little to no effort. This gardening in Canada video looks at a beginners guide to growing cannabis outdoors. We walk through pot size, soil fertilizer, water needs etc. This is a simple how to grow cannabis for beginners and doesn’t have any complicated concepts.

Cannabis growing in some regards has become very complicated in the information given. Cannabis growing doesn’t have to be at all difficult and can be done casually. I personally don’t enjoy using cannabis for anything other then bath bombs and lotions. But the cannabis plant in general is satisfying to grow.

Ashley is an agronomist who has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are YouTube, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s YouTube channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her YouTube channel as well as her reach to up and coming gardeners.

Cannabis doesn’t like the smell of you

I’m a fan of the fungi, bacteria, nemotode and protozoa regime. Most ( guys) grow like they drive, hard and fast. In leaf mould, worm castings for fertiliser or rabbit poop, is all you need. Knf recipes help. But it’s all about the bacteria and fungi. Bacteria is everywhere, just work on your micorizhae fungus network. Companion planting does wonders! Love your stuff lady, very nice!!

    Hello sunshine

  4. WildEdibles on September 23, 2021 at 11:46 pm

We use compost, rabbits bedding, i use comfrey fermented feed its a bloom helper, sometimes i use epsolm salts at the end very low amounts and i end up flushing it later (stress the plant to help the buds but i don’t know if it really helps or hurts, well it hurts the plant thats the point)
Trim up leaves for air flow so they dont mold

  5. Tayusz on September 23, 2021 at 11:49 pm

great vid.. would love to see a more specific video on how to control the trimming to teach the plant what to do for better flowering 🙂

  6. king james488 on September 23, 2021 at 11:49 pm

I’d give this a hundred thumbs up if I could lol…

good luck getting it to finish flowering before frost hits.

tho if you’re getting herm plants from reg seeds it’s time to find a new supplier… that shouldn’t happen, it’s just bad genetics and incompetent production.
or you got your seeds from a buddy who tried to save seeds from a fem plant that wasn’t hit by a proper male..

  7. WildEdibles on September 23, 2021 at 11:53 pm

Is it true they need to be under a meter tall? Lol i bend them over so they stay under the 8 foot tall fence lol
Oh i have microbes and fungi etc…:)

  8. 420 Troll on September 23, 2021 at 11:54 pm

best grow medium: 50% peat moss, 50% vermiculite plus some dolomite lime and gypsum. then feed ’em with miracle gro mixed with h2o until EC = 1.3. profit.

  9. 79PoisonBreaker on September 23, 2021 at 11:57 pm

There is auto-flower varieties aswell that are perfect for beginners or less hands on .

  10. SlavaGen on September 23, 2021 at 11:59 pm

Cannabis YouTube people tend to be really drastic with defoliation, only bunch of them tries not to defoliate without necessity. They remove weak branches and buds instead. Really, why should I remove fully functional sollar pannel, that produces energy for plant to grow? Same thing about lower foliage, it acts as food storage for plant and health indicator in case if something happens with roots.

  11. Dave on September 23, 2021 at 11:59 pm

An actual soil scientist doing YouTube videos related to cannabis = instant win. I’m in Saskatchewan as well and just trying to grow 4 at a time. 2 indoors and 2 outdoors. I struggle with the humidity here, and so many growers say your humidity needs to be much higher than 35ish haha

  21. Path Within on September 24, 2021 at 12:12 am

You just became very cool in my book. I love soil biology and this plant! But what I have been trying to work out is where do they grow naturally? Is it in open grass lands? Im trying to understand if they like a bacterial or fungal dominant soil. I think it’s fungal but I don’t really know. I would really appreciate your thoughts on the subject. I’m looking forward to your follow up vids on this subject 😃

    Oooh yeah!
I got my plants and my tent all set up and my seeds are peeking up through the soil! Last year I got 2.9 oz off of 3 plants as a complete noob. This year I’m using auto flowers Magic Melon from humboldt seed co.

I get so excited whenever you put out a new video because I always learn something new! I’d love to see a tissue culture video from you 😀

  26. MushroomMagpie on September 24, 2021 at 12:18 am

Training, instead of topping, gets similar results, without the setback and delay in growth. To the contrary, training seems to increase the speed of growth.

  27. WildEdibles on September 24, 2021 at 12:18 am

    Looking good
Mine look sad this year but they will take off soon
I talk weed at times i just go adult for thoes times 😉
Theres a big culture around weed but its ok just grow:)

  28. MushroomMagpie on September 24, 2021 at 12:19 am

A major problem with auto-flowering varieties is pollination from all the outdoor hemp crops up wind from wherever the plant is. I got a ton of seeds last year, but the upside of that is i have naturalized plants coming up now, everywhere!

  29. tobruz on September 24, 2021 at 12:21 am

Second year growing outside (inside stinks) last year in 5 gallon pots – produced well after being topped once, these seeds were of unknown origin (found in’s) I have feminized plants this year planted in ground. I was curious to see any quality difference this year.
Q- will they produce seed without being cross pollinated? And if so will they come true to seed next year?
Q- I should top prune immediately for better production?
I am growing in a narrow space against a wire fence (concrete reinforcement wire) and plan to fan prune to permit better air circulation.
I plan to take off any axial growth that protrudes from the wire support much like espalier training and attach the lateral growth to the support.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated
    Thanks Bruce

  32. Morning Wood on September 24, 2021 at 12:23 am

When you take the plants into the garage, are they in complete darkness?

  33. king james488 on September 24, 2021 at 12:23 am

I disagree with needing to have a cutting at a node… they say that but it’s never mattered for me at all.

one thing that does seems to help however is scraping the lower part of the stem where you want it to root to remove the "skin", especially with woodier varieties.

edit: also you want the rooting area to be in darkness. film canisters work great… if anyone knows what those are anymore.

Thank you!! Please make more of these 😊 most other videos are overly complicated

    Great information, thanks for sharing

  36. king james488 on September 24, 2021 at 12:24 am

flushing is supposed to be to remove "chems" from the buds when using artificial fertilizers… it’s probably largely pseudo science tho many claim it makes the bud smoke "smoother"
completely pointless when growing outdoors or organic though.

in a lot of indoor cannabis growing methods the soil is essentially dead… sometimes it’s even referred to as "soil-less medium". or no soil at all in the case of hydroponics. the idea being that you carefully monitor every aspect of the nutrients and add exactly what’s needed for absolute optimal growth.

    I’d rather just grow a plant myself…

  37. Forrest Phoenix on September 24, 2021 at 12:25 am

The light deprivation tip of putting the plants in dark for 3 days is huge. WAY better than having to put the plant in darkness every day at 6pm. One of the most informational videos on cannabis I’ve seen. Thank you. I hope you can teach us more.

  42. Dhamiri on September 24, 2021 at 12:30 am

Really appreciated the intro and hearing about your experience, for someone trying to transition in to industry was very insightful. As for the community most want the last word or to think their method is the best. However not to worry in the end of the day for this plant the science of the soil is everything next to light, your doing the right thing and good for you for finding the confidence to make the video because we need more personable videos sharing knowledge and experience out of Canada for current users and future on all topics regarding cannabis. and a side note it seems all plants on earth grow in living organic soil, even water plants there is no foam piece keeping the plants upright so the roots can float in the water, its great there is so many ways to grow but natural is probably best like in a jungle forest or oasis also hydro when done with integrity.

Suggestions for best variety for outdoor growing in Canada?

  46. Hurtin Albertan on September 24, 2021 at 12:34 am

There is a lot of great info here! however you have some things mixed up a bit. feminized seeds do have the possibility to “herm” that’s how they are produced by “selfing” it’s self by using colloidal silver or silver thiosulphate stressing the plant to cause balls to drop and pollinate its self. the herm trait is in every plant and stress factors like over feeding and patio light leeks can all cause this to happen “life will find a way”

Photoperiods flower cycle is trigger by light/dark schedule indoors growers will normally go from an 18/6 lights/dark during vegetation cycle in then switch to 12/12 to trigger the flower cycle, For outdoor photos each cultivar has its on trigger time. Photos can not be triggered by adding bloom amendments or potting in a smaller pot it will just get root bound and start showing deficiencies. Photoperiod indica cultivars will harvest roughly 8-9weeks after first signs of bloom Sativa’s roughly 12-14 (All Cultivar specific)

Auto flowers are like a time clock and flower from seed popping in roughly 68-80 days. Autos will flower regardless of light schedule but can be manipulated a little bit by using a smaller pot

    5:25 Ghost horse 😅

  48. tobruz on September 24, 2021 at 12:38 am

In my limited experience they are easier to grow than tomatoes but it’s the after production that’s time consuming!

  49. Steve Hillbilly on September 24, 2021 at 12:38 am

Hey great video. Cannabis grower here and you hit the nail on the head.
Marketing and propaganda has taking the industry to crazy costs.
Average home grower is bombarded with info, mostly one sided, to persuade sales.
Keep up the great work and peace ✌🏻 from Alberta Canada 🇨🇦
