I love how humbled Dave is around Johnny. Love their relationship. It’s just neat to see them together

Dave mentioned that Johnny was carrying the network for a while there and Johnny demurred, but it’s true. During the Fred Silverman Era, Johnny and The Tonight Show was the only thing NBC had that was making money. He saved NBC from going down the pooper.

Hard to believe, but prior to the Kennedy Assassination (November, 1963), there was no 1/2 hour evening news as we know it today. I believe John Cameron Swayze was only on for about 15 minutes at about 6 PM, and that was the extent of TV national news coverage.

Welp, in this reality, Ed McMahon did not give away Publishers Clearing House checks. In fact, he never even worked for them.

Sobering thought:
We’re only 1-2 generations away from no one knowing who these two icons are.

Johnny came to this show from the affiliate meeting where he announced his retirement. Supposedly Letterman knew–but it hadn’t been made public. This show, Letterman was hoping Johnny would say something but didn’t want to force the issue. You can tell when Johnny said "Last year" and kept going with it–no one noticed.

Letterman’s love and respect for Carson is a beautiful thing to watch.

Mandella Effect — Ed McMahon NEVER gave out those giant checks, so yeah this doesn’t make any sense now.

This was re-enacted in the HBO movie, The Late Shift. It was at the NBC affiliates meeting that Johnny Carson announced he would be retiring as host from The Tonight Show the following year.

I thought I heard that they had to bump Jim Carrey (then known as James) as a result of Johnny making this appearance. Carrey was still on "In Living Color" at the time.
