Medical illustrators should know the use of electronic media in surgical and conceptual illustration to storyboard creation, interactive media development, web design, animation, 3-D modeling, and prosthetics. A graduate degree program in this field is usually two years long.
Medical illustrators can have many job opportunities and can work in different places such as in hospitals, medical legal firms, universities and pharmaceutical companies. They can also set up private business and be self employed rather than work for someone else. There are also many specific areas in which medical illustrators can specialize such as forensics and prosthetics.
Medical illustration is a good field because it is a very specialized area of education and there are only a few people graduating in this field every year. This means that a person with a good degree has vast job opportunities because the job market in this area is not very competitive as yet.
