Marijuana and the Young Brain

Jodi Gilman, PhD, is the director of neuroscience at the Center for Addiction Medicine. Her research examines how marijuana affects the teen brain. Her team’s research has shown that the level of memory decline from marijuana is dependent on the age at which a young person begins using. She notes that this is a matter of public health concern as marijuana use has been shown to affect learning and has been strongly linked to the development of psychotic disorder.

I have been smoking quite frequently since high school graduation. Personally I want to stop. I am still young in my early twenties I notice when I stop for break periods my head just does not work the same when I’m not smoking. It kinda makes me feel bad and my memory is not as sharp as it was in grade/high. It really does slow you down if you aren’t a person on their A+ game everyday. It does indeed depend on the Individual but that does not necessarily mean the grass itself has no effect on you.

The issue cuts to the core of the conflict inherent in western culture: do you prefer your ordinary waking consciousness, or do you prefer your natural psychotic state? My natural psychotic state is ecstatic bliss, and I believe that I have a birthright to it. Where do you want to go today?

Unfortunately, our culture has little use for and tolerance of people like me. So I get labelled. And I don’t fit in. I seem to be a waste product of The Machine.

Dont get weed off of the street get it from a dispo and try not to smoke every day if you’re gonna get addicted its difficult to stop after smoking daily especially if you have a bad day and a blunt is your up then when you try and stop the second you get frustrated or upset your gonna want to smoke just so you can be high and forget about everything trust me I started out smoking like out the bowl maybe twice a day to about two to three blunts a day almost and after a while it wasn’t working for me like it used to it used to be fun and made me happy but as you go on and get older I started to get lazy and didnt wanna do anything all day and it sucked made it even harder just to calm down a little

Either way , the need to escape reality by chemically altering your brain clearly shows , among other things , a lack of basic coping skills .
One question to ask oneself , am I able to go out on a regular basis and have fun without smoking weed , drinking , etc ?
Do I smoke weed to relax due to stress ?
Am I more comfortable around others socially when I’m altered ?
Do I do it because others do and now I’m just use to it ?
Can I , …….have I gone an extended period of time without weed or alcohol ?
If the answer is , no , or that yes I have done that a couple of times should give the reasonably intelligent person cause to question their own personal psychological health .

  15. bad bitch on May 14, 2019 at 6:43 pm

Personally I don’t smoke weed and I don’t think I ever will because I don’t like the way it feels. (I’m allergic) I do drink alcohol and smoke cigs and overall I’m fine. I really don’t care if u smoke weed just don’t do it around me like go outside. Most of my friends smoke weed and they have better memory and are able to learn better then me. Might just be me though idk

  20. Tye Sweet on May 14, 2019 at 6:46 pm

Fuck that! The link between cannabis and psychosis is shaky at best(the only findings that support that say that people that ALREADY HAVE psychosis shouldn’t smoke weed.) also marijuana DID HELP my depression, and it is by far a better method than most pills out there

  21. resurrected P on May 14, 2019 at 6:49 pm

All this shit is a stereotype smoked my first spliff at 13 and I’m chill bout this… also that bitchass cunt talks like if she has a lawnmower powered vibrator up her ass jjjjjeeeez that bitch is wiiiiiiillllld probably when she was a kid she asked for a joint and the local plug refused so now she against thc… fact is delta9 thc, cbd, thvA, cbn and cbg (cbgE) stop cancer growth eventually killin off the hole tumor if treated properly.again folks this bitch is wild don’t listen! this is bullshit. 26. Liam Toomey on May 14, 2019 at 7:00 pm

I’m a 14 y/o and have been using marijuana for my sleep disorders and anxiety. I do personally notice that on days when I very high my memory gets foggy. I’d say alot of psychological effects depend on strains since they all have different effects.

100% about learning when you stop, i actually get to the point where i become bored of the concept and smoke just to challenge myself on the next problem.

  36. Space Pyro on May 14, 2019 at 7:08 pm

Hmmm i would like to point out a few things let me start off with that i started smoking cannabis at age 14 (im 15 now) and i dont know if this is just me but my memory is great from what i recall i have A’s and B’s in my class’s only missed one day and the thing about the psychosis the only way you can get it is if one of you family members passed it down the blood line i feel this study is only pointing out negatives and they dont evan mention CBD or any of that please call me out if im wrong but they cherry picked what they liked ONLY THE NEGATIVES i think they should make a video that talks about both sides not just one

  42. Jewels Salinas on May 14, 2019 at 7:15 pm

I was smoking one daily for 4 months then began doing it twice daily for seven & although I made straight A’s throughout the school year & other great things, I became super lazy & lost focused of what really matter. I’m 6 days clean now & that’s a lot for me !

  43. ExploitCode on May 14, 2019 at 7:15 pm

Nah. Weed is not for everyone. When I smoked it for the first time, i felt very scared and paranoid.
Then some time later, i decided to smoke it again and I thought I won’t get that same paranoid feeling. But no.

I am having it again and it’s not enjoyable.

  44. MB on May 14, 2019 at 7:16 pm

damnnn i started at 19 and i’m 5 now, this explains a lot

  45. Liv on May 14, 2019 at 7:16 pm

This really shows where our priorties lie, and that the goals of the past are still representative in the mainstream today. Unless you’re looking at specific areas of medicine, this is the generally accepted view in professional settings. Even though it’s legal in Canada, and many states, the perceptions haven’t hanged at the rate of the law changes, but that’s pretty normal for most things (gay marriage). "Weed is harmful to the young brain. Anyways, hey man, wanna get fucked up at the bar after work??" I’m not implying it doesn’t have any health consequences, but many other activities we do have consequences to our physical and mental health. It has a lot of benefits, and in my opinion, they outweigh the problems. A young child who suffers with seizures, and uses cannabis for those seizures, is not going to grow up with a learning disability. The research hasn’t shown any causation effects, it’s basically like a list of side effects for any medication. Tell me something I don’t know!

I’m 22 now, been smoking since 16. Started because of mental health issues and have been every single day for the past 3-4 years, am currently trying to stop as to why I watched this video. Addiction is real, and this lady is speaking facts.

  50. Scaxed on May 14, 2019 at 7:22 pm

I havent even smoked, but I feel high, is this a weed side effect? Or DP / DR?
