What Happens When A State Grows Way Too Much Weed (HBO)

When Oregon legalized recreational marijuana, the state decided to make the market as free and accessible as possible. It didn’t cap licenses, or restrict access to people living in state. It also made entry super cheapβ€”growing licenses in Oregon go for as little as $1,000, compared to tens of thousands of dollars just across the border in California.

The hope was to make it as easy as possible for everyone to get in on the new and exciting market. And it worked really well. Too well, in fact.

Fast forward just a few years, and Oregon now has a serious problem on its hands. The roughly 1,100 licensed producers growing weed right now are growing way too muchβ€”about twice what the state is actually consuming. And that’s creating all sorts of problems. Unless, of course, you’re a consumer. Then it’s awesome.

  2. Manny O on July 18, 2019 at 6:17 pm

Why is this open system which Oregon has portrayed as something bad? Lower prices are good, bot bad! Of course not everyone will be successful that’s how markets work. You think that if you restrict the number of licence growers to a fixed number, some small home grower will be able to get a licence? No chance! The system that Oregon has now allows small boutique growers to offer specialized high-quality product and carve out a niche for themselves alongside the large industrial growers.

This is how it should be in every state. No limit and no competition.

Any one with a brain should have thought this out, buying or starting a business for 1000 bucks thinking your gonna get rich was there 1st mistake, I’ve seen hundreds of guys spend 10 ro 20 grand in there basement to sell iron the black market and fold up after 2 to 4 months because its not easy, weed like anything else should be affordable. With big business trying to do it they will find out fast your not gonna get rich on a weed that we all can grow and have, there will be many that grow great weed and the strong will survive, but the black market will always be there to keep everyone honest, the days of making 3 to 4 grand a pound is gone, that price was ludicrous any ways, 95% of normal people can’t afford it, weed is a plant on the earth that should be easily accessible for everyone period

They say Debears Diamond Mines ownes hundreds of miles of Diamonds. Yes they say that the Diamonds are so thick that they look like leaves on the ground in the fall. They keep people from getting their hands on Diamonds. So Diamonds are very valuable. Man has a history of the many things that got inflated until one day that supply and demand catches up. You see history repeats itself. With pot. Legalization now.

So this report is basically an attack on the free market system and is total nonsense. Nonsense in the sense that it doesn’t make sense at all. The free market entails failure and improvements in quality and price. It’s a competition and it drives innovation and strong work ethics upwards.

Not to mention that this market isn’t strictly speaking free since you’re limited to the state of Oregon in terms of trade.

How can you not run a business profitably with a price even as low as $300 per pound? That is still an insanely high price compared to any other type of crop.

HBO NOW/GO: "Stream full episodes for a month." That’s because it’ll take about a month to watch a months worth, with all of the damn ‘Network Error’ pop ups. It continues to play in the background the entire time the error pops up. You mean to tell me that there’s a network error but it can continuously keep playing? Fucking magic…

  31. Roman N on July 18, 2019 at 6:45 pm

Is this an American news outlet or Communist "Pravda"?
"On no! Free market created an abundance of produce and cheap prices! And now entrepreneurs who built their business on assumption that there will be no competition and prices will always stay high, are closing down… Terrible! We need Government intervention to tell us who can produce what and how much and what the price should be! We want socialism! Because everywhere else it worked perfectly…"

  38. Kenfuy on July 18, 2019 at 6:54 pm

The surplus was mostly fresh frozen to be used for extracts not dry cured flowers for smoking. Super cheap extracts that are pretty good in terpene quality simply cause they are FF, but the bud is lacking and getting more scarce as more small time growers have to shut down.

  39. LegitBacKd00rNiNJa69 on July 18, 2019 at 6:57 pm

  45. evilcowboy on July 18, 2019 at 7:02 pm

There is nothing right about regulating, legislating and taxing something that does not belong to you. Raise your hand if you invented weed. Capitalizing on anything grown and then bitching when that market falls due to others growing their own is childish.

If you believe the government should regulate a fucking plant then you are out of your goddamn mind and you belong in your own compost pile (that means shoot yourself). Last I checked government is not nature, the universe or God leaving absolutely no right to regulate it out of the hands of people willing to do the same amount of work for themselves. What those people are pissed about is it removed the ability to create a monopoly and that is a good thing.

If your business fails because you failed to account for a change in marketing then your a moron who obviously lacks the education to keep up and you are the reason it failed. Quarter predictions are not a new concept and many companies make them. The problem with your business is although you sell a product wanted by people you relied on it as the only thing to sell in the store, your business should be loaded with other products with partnerships with other companies to sell their products in your store. A store that looks like a clinic is a store that is about to fail. Never rely on a singular product to keep a store rolling thats why a gas station don’t just sell gas, those people sign up for liquor, lottery, cigarettes, candy etc. Some stores could have been saved by offering normal products to bring new customers in and to cater to existing customers who had the munchies. I didn’t see one goddamn bag of chips in any of the stores in this video.

Its not the market its the person’s poor business model.

  50. melo7849 on July 18, 2019 at 7:07 pm

The solution here is simple. Everyone in Oregon needs to smoke twice the amount of weed that they do know. The large supply isn’t a problem, it’s a blessing. The demand just need to grow. TV commercials telling you to GO GET high? Funny stuff.
