Marijuana and Mental Illness
There are three things to think about when it comes to marijuana and mental illness.
1. Can marijuana cause mental illness?
2. Can marijuana be used to treat mental illness?
3. Can the way our society treats marijuana itself cause mental illness?
So let’s take the first one: Can marijuana cause mental illness? Well, for a long time people have worried about this. Societies going back to 19th century have been concerned whether marijuana use can cause people to go insane. There was whole (?) madness where people really believed or were thought to believe that use of marijuana could lead to mania, homicidal mania specifically, where you go crazy and kill people. But every time that’s been seriously looked at, studied by scientific bodies, they really couldn’t find any kind of association with these mania syndromes. More recent studies are being done to look at specifically certain vulnerable populations like adolescents who have preexisting mental health problems. And it turns out that possibly we might be able to find a correlation with adolescents who use marijuana who have preexisting behavioral and psychological problems may be at a higher risk developing longer standing psychotic problems, but these associations are very weak. They are done through retrospective studies and you really can’t do a controlled study to find that out. The problem with these studies is that it really confounds how the society views marijuana because it turns out that with all the law enforcement, all the messages that we get about marijuana, when you’re going against that grain by using something that’s both prohibited and taboo and stigmatized and illegal, that itself can cause psychological distress. It’s difficult to tease that out from the actual substance itself.
Now it turns out that marijuana has been shown in some studies to be associated with improved mental health in patients who are chronically mentally ill. There have been studies in chronic schizophrenia patients that those who are using cannabis or marijuana in some studies have longer lives, in some studies have higher levels of social functioning. That’s all related to the fact that the system that marijuana binds to in our brain and nervous system is tied in very intimately to our cognitive functioning in our way that we approach the world and our ego construction. That’s what that’s about. A lot of people are excited about the use of compounds in marijuana like cannabidiol (CBD) to treat illnesses like schizophrenia and psychosis. Certainly there is interest in depression treatment, anxiety treatment, posttraumatic stress disorder. All of these things are exciting areas in the world of mental illness treatment with marijuana.
Finally marijuana enforcement itself can be a trigger for mental illness because of the chronic distress of worrying about being prosecuted by law enforcement. I’ve met numerous patients and people who live in places where it’s illegal to use marijuana even though it’s medically okay at the state level, but the federal government saying it’s illegal, and they are caught. This can cause really severe distressing symptoms. So that itself is all part of this social framework that we put marijuana into. So we have to be careful how we build those frameworks.
man i just wanna smoke so i can make beats work an school im unmotivated since i stopped smoking how bout that for a change
make sure to smoke sativa becuz that works better for people with depression and indica for people with anxiety
I’ve had very bad trips on weed, but recently with repeated use, I’m able to stabilize myself and calm down. The subconscious is a hell of a thing, while in a altered state of mind, it’s easy to convince yourself of anything (for example rapid heart rate). You can induce a anxiety attack, and because your high, it can all just snowball until you’re tripping hard. However, you always have to take it back, focus on the moment, focus on something other than a negative thought and your experience with marijuana will be positive. I’ve been using it for insomnia and it’s been great to me. During the day I can be sober and enjoy life. Hope this can help someone.
Marijuana may only be good for some issues just like any other drug out there. If I have a headache am I going to drink pepto? No I’m going to take aspirin. Don’t try to use it marijuana as a cure all for everyone and then shoot it down because it doesn’t work for a certain illness. We do t treat any other treatment like that.
2013- before politics owned the truth. now the right lies about it and so does the left.
we live in the age of probaganda.
It all depends on the strains, dude. My weed was laced with pcp but I’m pretty sure it was the vyvanse pills that truly set me off. Thanks doc. I hate that it’s advertised as a gateway drug. It’s not a miracle drug but it definitely has a lot less side effects than the pills that are dosed out. I’m not against either but when your doc doesn’t know what he’s doing, smoke weed.
Someone please help I’ve been worrying about this situation! My family has a history of schizophrenia (grandmother) and bipolar (mother). My mom told me herself that she feels weed caused her to have a mental breakdown since she smoked so much when she was younger and she smoked still as an adult. I’m 16 and smoke daily and I’m terrified I will get any of these mental illnesses because I have witnessed my mom and grandmother go through it, and it is terrifying. Please someone tell me your input on if you feel smoking at an early age, could cause mental illness. I really don’t want to quit since it has positively impacted my life, so is it safe if I still smoke, but not on an everyday basis. Btw I only smoke like 0.2-0.3 grams which is a very low amount a day.
Well I have bipolar II disorder and I don’t take any medicine I smoke a lot of weed and it helps a lot
cannabis is the best thing for my anxiety
It’s like playing russian roulett, either you feel good on it or you feel like your going insane and having a psychotic episode. And the psychotic episodes are scary enough to turn a person away from it forever. Or until they know what is causing the psychosis. And it doesn’t help that all the cannabis is grown to have as much thc as possible with little cbd. Especially in an area where pot is illegal. You get what you get and that’s it. Very sad state of affairs.
I knew the lady from Massachusetts was lieing u the homie doc
marijuana does the same thing that alcohol does for me when im depressed and down in the dumps. it makes me feel a hell of lot better almost like that depression and sadness goes right out the window. and i have seen a doctor about my condition and all they want to do is give me meds and those meds work to but give me the zombie like effects and i hate that. so i stick with weed and alcohol.
Well let me tell you. I’m diagnosed with Bpd and use cannabis as a medication. And like the guy mentioned in an earlier comment if u treat the plant with the respect it deserves it will be amazing for you. You have to know your balance I can’t smoke concentrates or smoke big amounts anymore like I used to or it sends me into sort of an emotional phychosis I would say. But also when I go with no cannabis this also happens to me. I only smoke pm few bongs. And it works for me. Can deffo go both ways just depends if you have enough self control not to abuse it.
I used to like Marijuana when I was 13….kept doing it up until I was 26 I’m through with it. I’m happier without it, even second hand smoke will get me going all schizophrenic. Even the smell just bothers me. I guess I grew up. Good luck to you all
if you younger then 23 and your brain is not fully grown you can easy get anxiety dissorder or in the first place what i have .. depersonalisatio/derealisation and its a hell of a dissorder
IKeep them coming!
I have been an advocate for medical marijuana. But as far as what this person in this YouTube video is saying regarding marijuana and stimulating mental illness I would like to add that I personally am in her current situation where my daughter has had difficulties with anxiety and depression since she was an adolescent and over the past year and a half with use of marijuana she’s been admitted to a mental facility twice on a 5150 because of psychiatric issues of paranoia schizophrenia and other psychosis. She was stabilized for a short time but then began smoking marijuana again and again she has behavior change issues personality changes and she is really screwed up but she doesn’t want to stop using marijuana because she looks up information online about how useful marijuana is. So in her head the marijuana is going to help her even though her psychiatrist has said the use of marijuana will not allow her other medications to work correctly.
In my prospective I think weed is bad because everyone always tould me to never smoke it because it’s bad but now in the United States it’s okay to smoke I don’t think people with mental illness as myself should smoke it because it’s still drug and people get addicted to it
Cannabis can cause mental illness i dont care what people say but it does cause i smoked it alot and it caused me anxiety paranoid and turned me to a wierdo plus a know it all.
If schizophrenia is excess dopamine, how can it be improved by taking something that increases dopamine (and improves Parkinson’s, a deficit of dopamine)…? I would think marijuana would be a disaster for schizophrenia????
Doctors now say a little mental illness is good for you.
No, i don’t wanna smoke anyway can’t go away from my oath i wanna be strong enough to live without it 😄
I have schizoaffective disorder and I don’t take any meds . I smoke weed and it helps . The meds make me feel like I’m not me .
LEGALIZE MARIJUANA FEDERALLY NOW!
Iv been two months sober I quit because of an episode of psychosis
I cant find any information on google on this question, "Can secondhand smoking marijuana worsen symptoms of schizophrenia??" anyone know the answer to this?
Marijuana education should be conducted like tobaco and alcohol education. If you are are under 21, just don’t use it, except perhaps CBD oil.
I’m so thankful I live in a recreational state
Had me goin insane so i stopped smoking
Having a mental illness then smoking weed makes u understand why u mentally ill is a break through its up to u to fix 🤖
It helps my Bi-polar Disorder, OCD, joint pain (arthritis), IBS, GERD, Migraines and social anxiety. What works for one doesn’t work for another. I am also on a anti depressant and a mood stabilizer. This is the cocktail that works for me. Haven’t had a hospitalization since 20O9. I don’t drink alcohol or take other drugs. Also no coffee (makes me too manic).
A good friend of mine smokes cannabis to help with her endometriosis (endometrial cells growing outside the uterus), aswell as back pain from an accident she had as a child. Some days she cannot even leave bed and the regular medication she uses cannot help when it’s at it’s worst. Cannabis really helps her dampen the pain.
Everyone that I have ever known who took weed for “depression/anxiety” were just using it for fun. I had legitimate suicidal depression and tried every strain, method, dosage and they all made me infinitely worse. I dont use it but have no problem with people who use it like they wold alcohol. Just dont skew the statistics by trying to sound like a victim or a patient to justify your weed use, since you just make it harder for people with real mental illness to get straight facts.
"Social Framework" aside….you neglected to mention that THC and CBD are contra-indicacted with many psch meds because they inhibit the metabolic liver enzyme Cytochrome P 450 which breaks down medications. There’s a lot more to this than social stigma. There’s a very real biochemical issue. Unfortunately those who want to promote THC and CBD don’t mention that and the general public doesn’t know it’s dangerous to take prescriptions with THC and CBD.
I was diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (my manias are pretty bad and my depressions are bad too) in 2012 at 15-16 years old. I haven’t smoked weed until I was 18-19. The second time I smoked weed (first time went well), I had a crazy reaction to it. I was with my friend, and I started out being happy, laughing a lot etc. But, then I got sad pretty fast. Then, according to my friend, I was eventually acting demonic; I’d mumble under my breath in a deep, raspy voice and have to say what I said in that voice so he could understand what I was saying. He got really scared with me because I eventually said I wanted to beat him up, but I couldn’t move. I’d start growling at random and my mouth would flutter causing my teeth to chatter. Eventually, I fell asleep on his bed and when I woke up, we had a recap on what happened. But, the chattering of my teeth and growling kept going for the rest of the next day. Now, when I smoke weed (and I do it every so often), I act like every normal person: I get chill, laugh, slow down mentally, get the munchies, and eventually, sleep.
My sister is type 1 bipolar. She smoked a bit of weed this morning after not having smoked it for months and had a complete psychotic breakdown/episode. She was hallucinating and hearing things and after 4-5 hours, she didn’t remember anything that had happened. It was the scariest and weirdest thing I’ve ever seen and I’ve never seen her behave that way in my life. I didnt even know marijuana could do that. I quit smoking it about 2 years ago, (smoked since I was 13, am now 25) just because I wanted to live a sober lifestyle. I am pro legalization. But the research needs to be done on the connection/effect with cannibis on mentally ill people and/or if it causes mental illness. Because after this morning, I certainly believe that if you are mentally ill in any way, I would not chance smoking weed. The things my sister were saying were completely bizarre. It was the scariest/weirdest expierience I’ve had in my entire life. She was so sad and confused when I was telling her that none of what she was seeing/hearing was real. And her eyes, oh my god! It’s like I could see into her soul. I can’t describe it. I was asking her if she took anything else and if I could see the weed and she was being completely honest and somewhat robotic in everything I was asking her. (If she’s using drugs, she always lies about it, even though I can tell if she’s high) That was another strange thing about this. All of this was completely surreal for me. I told her I would talk with her tomorrow, because she called me after I dropped her off back home (after she started being normal again), and she completely was clueless as to what happened and that she thinks she blacked out and didnt know why or what happened? It’s a sad thing. And something I didn’t even know that was possible from smoking weed. I am at a loss with what to do about this.
If you smoke weed recreationally, you’re mentally weak
For me I had to quit smoking weed because it made my anxiety/bad thoughts or depression 10 times worse
Dissapointed with Howcast. Is this the best they can do? If they were teachers at a highschool and followed the lives of their students they would be saying something else. All kids that I know that have commited suicide usually some time after highschool smoked. And you can see how it alters the lives of kids also if you meet them as kids and then see them grow into adults before they graduate. It is truly sad. They always claim that it is better than alcohol…. I could go on and on. It makes me wonder about the managment at Howcast!
I smoke hash it has no bad trip or what ever all giggling and good high try it some guys fast onset and not to caught up to the police
Teri maa ka bhosda sale itna padh ke nasha promote krta h …
Weed and my bipolar disorder don’t mix. I smoked a lot from age 15 to 25. Late twenties every session was like a bad trip. I miss smoking, but my mental health is more important.

I know this is antidotal evidence but cannabis has really turned my life around. If tried a lot of different medications for my issues with sleep, IBS pain, adhd, depression, anxiety, and PTSD, but they either don’t work or make my symptoms worse. In most cases I’ve had to go to the hospital for further treatment. Once I tried cannabis, all of those issues improved, even after only smoking once. Since then my quality of life has greatly improved.

My brother acts very demonic if he doesn’t smoke. He smokes everyday like he needs it. I asked him why does he smoke it and he said he doesn’t know. He’s the type of person that has the answer to everything. No matter what you say to support him or motivate him, he comes back with some biblical message. And I always say to myself, if you know all this good messages, why do you still do what you do? His reply is, we all sin. I believe this is somewhat of an antichrist spirit. For he feels he has the answers to everything and if he can’t smoke, he acts like a beast. If you are addicted to anything in this world, you need to make sure if it’s your flesh or a demon.
started smoking at 14 every day im 27 livin at my moms what do you think weed does to you.
It lowers all my fight or flight responses I have paranoid schizophrenia and it helps me relax and think clearly and more organized I also have complex ptsd and it helps that too.
I have been constantly haunted by fears of being persecuted by law enforcement when trying to use medical cannabis for pain and tension. My body feels great, but I keep seeing in my mind ‘Jeff Sessions’ speaking about a crackdown . so hard to relax. Im glad California has been very supportive of this treatment. The shooting pains and back aches are unbearable sometimes, without it. Trying not to poison my liver with ibuprofen . Will never use Opioids!
