Core Knowledge Every Cannabis Budtender Should Know / Max Montrose / Green Flower

Outlining the essential information all budtenders should possess when interfacing with a wide spectrum of clientele – from medical patients to adult-use consumers – Trichome Institute’s Max Montrose makes the case for more comprehensive cannabis education and training in the retail sector.

As an example, he breaks down the process of how cannabis edibles work and are processed in the body – information that is often unclear or unknown to many budtenders and consumers, and as a consequence, results in unpleasant cannabis experiences.

During this Green Flower cannabis summit presentation, he also gives an unflinching state-of-the-industry assessment of the shortcomings in cannabis knowledge and education, plus criteria of what to look for when seeking high-quality cannabis educational programs.

This is ok but the growers are the ones that educate the bud tenders.Don’t hold yourself up on some kind of mountain where you think you know it all.Budtender knowledge is great as it should be but unless you cultivate you don’t know jack.

I’ll be honest with you guys. I saw first hand what dispensaries demand from their Budtenders and I saw amazing and crappy budtenders same goes for the dispensary itself. Most crappy ones belong to you average big company, the big cats and they do not pay them well enough for the budtender to consider doing anything but average work. They certainly do not earn enough money to do a certification and you the speaker are the mouthpiece for corporations and you are hence a lobbyist. You want to lead the way to create experienced, licensed, hopefully unionized cashier like budtenders who have great knowledge and are great with customers. How about adequate training and respect. How about adequate pay and benefits and the ability to unionize?

You pay them what $12 some pay their budtenders $15 and I hear rarely $20 anywhere. I worked as an Industrial salesman in Germany. The company I worked for building industrial sized air condition units used a 3 shift system. The workers came with a genuine smile to their work because the company , who is still worldwide market leader, does something the Industry has forgotten. It’s called decency and fairness. Initial pay starts at 30 Euro that’s $40 USD an hour. 13 month salary meaning you get an double the regular paycheck for December + Christmas Bonus + 4 month paid leave when your wife is getting a baby. A 5000$ cheque once your baby is there. I hear Californians talking about Social Democracy but only marginally understanding what it really is. We Germans had it after the WWII otherwise we would’ve never recovered to this day.

You do not understand the Industry most people don’t, they just believe they do. The average dispensary owner has gotten as greedy as the average shark above. This is already a huge problem in the US and Canada. The Cannabis Industry as it is today is not interested in the public good. Tiny mom and pop stores cannot but I do not talk about them obviously. CEO’s won’t get 500m a year anymore shareholders won’t see rising profits but they never should’ve in the first place! You all can do it if you do not have greedy owners! Cannabis Culture rose out of counter culture to the Establishment and they bought so many out and too many took the cash and sold out! Not that I didn’t know that it would happen that was clear. Humans are frail beings. That goes for all of us just varying in degrees.

  4. Rude Raccoon on February 13, 2020 at 9:57 am

This is a sale. All this guy is saying is: Everyone’s schools and techniques are wrong, mine are right. Make sure to buy my stuff. He’s a businessman, not a cannabis lover. He tried to make it sound like bathtub crank is being made and injected into gummy bears and then make people insane afterwards. This is a guy who would do more damage to the industry by turning more control to corporations and government. This is the path to heavy regulation and taxation to squeeze the little guy out. Corporations don’t want competition or to have a populace capable of growing their own: they want you to buy theirs.

Sure having bud tenders educated is great but I feel company’s dispensaries should label effects and side effects of every product where any Jo can walk in and know what to expect for example og kush promotes relaxation can cause drowsy than the adult can decide what they want from the product as not even a pharmacist can tell you off head everything about every drug they hand out having a computer with data would be best

All cannabis is of the black market we kep it safe for years now we still have loads of lovely healing plants to shear with the world. If it was the doctors way the guvement way thay would be no cannabis lest on this planet. So if any think we should all show our love of the black market and to all the farmers who got jail for it. As it’s people like us what make it possible for all this lovely healing. You can tell good weed just by looking at it. Just a look and a smell my body will tell me if it likes it and it fir me our if I don’t like it and it not for me. Fire weed onley comes from hard work. Stick to your cannabis team Bro don’t sell out to babilon. Our all them billions will end up in the pockets. It’s the black market we should all be sending our love to. As they are the real hero’s who have showed the world how it heals. And it is threw those people why kids can last a hole day at school with no fits. You look like a little posh kid who has onley touched cannabis since its legit. You just done the same as the rest on Google no think an good come out your mouth. Don’t sell people out stepping on sols to get where you want get is not working no Moor times are changing Bro. I love ya each to there own but you don’t need to put a brother down pull him up if you no some think he don’t shear it with him. So he can put out better medication. I love you brother each to there own.

IMHO, medical and recreational should be sold separately. 1, I don’t care what "certifications" they’ve got, I’m not gonna trust some 18 year old minimum wage worker bee with my health. 2, If it’s separate and you get a script, maybe we can get insurance to cover it

Some form of training for Bud Tenders is without a doubt beneficial. However the problem is that there is no one size fits all type of training because there are so many different elements in marijuana that all combine to play a part in producing the effect that a person might experience. As if that weren’t enough to complicate things then there is the fact that each person consuming a marijuana product has a different body chemistry that also play a role. Essentially you can have two different patients, with the exact same problem and they can use the exact same marijuana product whether it be edibles, was or whole buds, and they can each get very different results. Now you do cover an important step which is starting a discussion with the customer to learn what they are looking for and then make suggestions with tips such as when eating edibles to wait an appropriate time after eating a normal suggested amount rather then just keep eating more until you feel something. Ultimately though all a bud tender can really do is steer a customer towards the proper category of products for the customers needs and make good suggestions on how the customer can go about adjusting amounts and types until they find what works for them. Any bud tender who thinks he or she can come up with the perfect product for every customer is living in a fantasy.

In Washington it needs to clearly go back to medical and recreational shops. The quality has declined and consistently burns black all the way through. My old medical shop always burned grey to white Ash…

Thank you so much for this video there are some many people out here clueless just consuming marijuana and not having any idea on what they are truly doing thank you very much and keep these great videos.

  23. Bloth Smargle on February 13, 2020 at 10:21 am

$1200 courses?! Get ‘certification’ at end, but, overall, seems like since there is no industry wide accepted standards of any certification, that’s quit a cost with no guarantee of companies taking you seriously over a $250 certification from elsewhere. I’d like to see some study on job placement relative to each ‘certification ‘company, not a "look at me, I’m more sophisticated and ‘better’" campaign.

Plant pharmacist…..terpines smells and taste effects certain aches and pain differently. Some helps the relaxation and anxiety and this is why it’s medicinal. This makes sense because docs doesn’t train the tenders.

You need training ( but not for gunsmithing)

  31. brian michaud on February 13, 2020 at 10:31 am

So which one of these institutes will teach my budtender to stop shorting me.2- .3 every time. I figured 4th grade math would cover it but guess not…alot of this stuff should be the job of the buyer to research not the person selling it. Sure its good to hv the knowledge so the few that hv zero clue can learn, but anyone putting a psychoactive drug in their body should be responsible for researching that drug to the fullest before they do. Sounds like all we are doing is trying to educate people to be responsible when somebody else takes something they shouldn’t have. Next thing you know you’re going to have yuppies handing out lawsuits to dispensaries because they got too high because now you are putting all of the responsibility onto the person selling you the pot and none on the person actually consuming it….btw since when is there paraffin or actual wax in wax concentrates…..

Bud tenders make a shitty wage . How about the industry paying bud tenders a decent wage so they can afford to sample what they are selling.

  36. 7X HARDER on February 13, 2020 at 10:36 am

13:00 I have tried different edibles, and none have ever had an effect on me. I’ve had legitimate thc gummies and chocolates from Colorado, but didn’t even get a buzz. I do have a very high metabolism, but strangely enough I am a VERY lightweight smoker. A single gram lasts me a couple of sessions 😂 I have never truly figured out why this happens.

  37. John Schwindt on February 13, 2020 at 10:38 am

Shouldn’t the first question for a patient be: are you trying to medicate responsibly or are you trying to see the devil??

  38. Stephen Accomando on February 13, 2020 at 10:39 am

Sorry… you’re just advocating more GUBMINT… and like ALL "vested interests" you champion your paycheck (ie Industry)…

How about you leave us all alone…and quit your disingenuous portrayal of "patients" and "medicine"???

…there should be NO more oversight on cannabis….than there is on sweet basil and tomatoes.

    ….fuck Gubmint "certifications". ☮️

  39. Jonathan Moore on February 13, 2020 at 10:44 am

This sounds good but it going to drive the cost of cannabis even higher. Bud tenders will get higher salaries and or the dispensaries will have to pay for training. Legal weed in cali is way more expensive than it was when medical marijuana 215 was law of the state. Eventually consolidation and the efficiency it brings might correct this, but I am not holding my breath. Further I think the coming consolidation is unfair to the og’s of the industry and is going to negative impact cannabis diversity.

  45. 2 piece Willy on February 13, 2020 at 10:53 am

Budtender= unemployed cab driver, what a joke !!!

  46. Willie Growit on February 13, 2020 at 10:53 am

There’s no such thing as "responsible vendor training" at this point. Atleast not for a bud tender. There’s been so little real research done. The only real "experts" are the lifetime smokers and growers with decades of independent research and experience. Even that’s a slippery slope. Lots of bad info, myths, and misunderstandings out there.

  47. Ryan Chase on February 13, 2020 at 10:53 am

Because what the masses need is someone who didn’t grow it explaining the intricacies before they get taxed. Grow it yourself, people. Fuck a well versed middleman.

  48. Mr Weber on February 13, 2020 at 10:54 am

Cannabis is Grown with a Potent chemicals chemicals which makes it flower and bud what you process into this chemical you make a stink solution where you processing the marijuana into a usual smell which everybody is identified with it meaning that your setting up individual people for a cause of crime for smoking it over in certain parts of the areas all because of your chemical solution what you had provided inside your mouth on
