INFO: Sleep is an American doom metal / stoner rock trio from San Jose, California. The band has often been talked about as one of the more influential bands in those genres in addition to acts like Kyuss, High on Fire and Om. They were founded in 1990 then broke up by the end of the decade but got back together in 2009 and have been active ever since. Now what makes Sleep such a unique band to a lot of fans is their 1999 released third album Jerusalem and the altered and slightly more popular version of this album known as Dopesmoker released in 2003. It’s an album consisting of one song lasting over 50 minutes. Some versions lasting over an hour. On top of that, the song is also quite monotonous. Guitarist Matt Pike repeats the same notes and melodic patterns over and over. When i describe it it might come off as boring. So why is this album regarded as a stoner rock cornerstone? That’s the question i’ll answer in this video.

  19. XeverettX on February 15, 2020 at 10:24 am

Jerusalem was the working title hence why it had different parts and then final product was called Dopesmoker which originally had the crazy looking horse on the front. The newer artwork with the gas masks are actually bongs/vaporizers you wear on the back and the mask is the hit piece. They are worn by the Hasheashians/lungsmen (presumably). They are monks transporting bails of weed across the holy land i.e. Jerusalem.

i find it awesome that in any photo you have of Al playing bass, he’s always got some sort of Rickenbacker. You’ll see him with some odd ones, like his custom 4004, the 4002 shown in the video, there’s even an Instagram post of him with a 4005/8!

  22. Millmond on February 15, 2020 at 10:27 am

Dopesmoker cover looks like something out of Frank Herbert’s Dune, the book series

  23. Mark Tully on February 15, 2020 at 10:27 am

The cover is reminiscent of the Scifi book of Dune on the desert planet Arrakis

  24. mémdíler on February 15, 2020 at 10:32 am

    >same melodic pattern over and over
Why does everyone say Dopesmoker is the same riff on repeat, did you guys never listen to it? There are about 10 different riffs and 3 long solo sections, if you made the riffs 8 secs long instead of 2 minutes you’d get a pretty orthodox stoner metal song.

  25. shredthegnar on February 15, 2020 at 10:34 am

Do you have to show your face?

  26. ShagStars Productions on February 15, 2020 at 10:37 am

funny that one songs is 5 times longer than a video telling me about the song.

  27. Satevo on February 15, 2020 at 10:38 am

I don’t like it when people call Weed dope. Weed is not dope. Heroin is dope. Weed is weed.

  29. misterbizzones on February 15, 2020 at 10:39 am

lemme save you some time, they plugged in a bunch of fuzz pedals and smoked dope

  30. Myfukinusername on February 15, 2020 at 10:40 am

Dopesmoker sucks. Riffs aren’t good, not clever, not original, lyrics suck, singing sucks, production sucks. Guitar tones are alright but still not very unique.

Aw, yeah. My kind of video *Starts joint*

  35. TNT on February 15, 2020 at 10:46 am

it did NOT take 4 years to make that song, They got kicked off their label when they heard the recording and it took 4 years to get it out. Matt was not smoking weed at the time. The band had not even been together 4 years when the song was recorded. Im not sure where you got your information? The song was created in the studio and is a product of the studio.

  36. czgibson on February 15, 2020 at 10:50 am

2:46 It’s important to realise Dopesmoker is NOT the same melodic pattern all the way through. While the note C does appear much more often than any other note, there are easily enough riffs in the song to fill an album and keep it interesting. They even printed a list of the named riffs on the vinyl inner sleeve.

  37. Ettnoll Bajen on February 15, 2020 at 10:51 am

I think they got into legal issues with the name Jerusalem, since there’s been a band (shitty) with that name since -75

    How to doom metal:
    1: vintage style guitar
2: drop tune enough to be low but not djent low
    3: 90 bpm *max*
4: 1 note per beat, 2 beats *max* . 4 notes if you want to write thrash doom
