Is The DEA Preparing To Downgrade Marijuana Classification?

The DEA has revealed that by the end of summer 2016, it will make a decision on whether to reschedule marijuana. Currently marijuana’s classification is Schedule I, under the Controlled Substances Act. Many federal lawmakers are pushing for the downgrade in classification, especially now that the substance is legal for medical use in many states. There has been a push to urge President Obama to ensure the rescheduling process before he leaves the White House; however, Obama has said that he has no plans to delve into marijuana reform before he leaves office. The FDA is conducting a full review of the cannabis plant and its verdict will be crucial to the DEA’s decision.
