Jamaicans Are Worried Foreigners Will Take Over the Ganja Market (HBO)

Until very recently, smoking weed was completely illegal in Jamaica.

But in 2015, the law changed, and individuals are now allowed to have a small amount of ganja for personal use. Medical sales are allowed, and permits for larger farming operations are also being granted – slowly.

The ganja industry will undoubtedly generate a lot of money – especially from tourists, who will be looking to partake in a bit of authentic Jamaican weed.

But this raises the question: who is going to profit from this? Jamaicans, or somebody else?

Since 2015, Jamaica has become the site of a ganja gold rush, as foreign investors pump in money and set up shop on the island. Smaller local farmers, many of whom were being harassed and punished for growing in the past, simply can’t compete.

Some locals see this as another extension of colonial inaction.

“I’m not saying all of these investors coming in are evil,” says Ras Iyah V, an activist who has been fighting for ganja legalization for years.

“I’m just saying most of these coming in are concerned with money. About making money out of an industry that our people have suffered for.”

VICE News visited Jamaica to find out what the future of ganja is on the island.

Kenya has not yet legalized it yet.
With only one roll you’d go to jail.

I fucking hate how these big companies just all of a sudden get up all over peoples business just because it’s now become profitable business. They’ll stick around for three maybe four years worth of profit and bounce not even cleaning up after themselves. They have no respect nor the clue of how important these plants are to this little island. This is part of their culture that’s been with them there entire life passed on to them, it’s more than just an income to them it’s medicine. With the island having to go through all the crime and homicide from the past all because of this plant. But in actuality the legal system in Jamaica was a corrupt system, and the ones to blame for that dark era. Who do you think were the major influencer for Jamaica’s government to push hard against the war on drugs to their own people for a plant that covers that whole island naturally. Though this plant has caused a lot of blood shed, but it has also never stopped growing for the people and continues to be used to care for Jamaicans, that’s why Jamaicans care so much about this plant.
