A brief history of toilets – Francis de los Reyes

Explore the history of the toilet and how waste management has evolved from from ancient Mesopotamia to modern day.

On sunny days, citizens of ancient Rome could be found exchanging news and gossip while attending to more urgent business at the public latrines. Today, most cultures consider trips to the restroom to be a more private occasion. But even when going alone, our shared sewage infrastructure is one of the most pivotal inventions in human history. Francis de los Reyes shares the history of the toilet.

medieval toilets were one of the most vulerable parts of a castle, as besiegers would often try to get in through the sewage system. due to the narrow size of the chutes ( the castle toilet was a stone seat with a hole in the middle connected to a chute that dumped the waist outside, usually in a body of water) they would get stuck and die.

  40. terryclotf on June 23, 2021 at 8:35 pm

all this said. when white man came and stole north america, the native peoples did not have roads, bridges, buildings or much of a written language. is that not amazing? what do you think this country would be today if we had never stole it from the natives. i think it would be a sewer pit.

India may have toilets but that’s only have the battle. You have to treat the waste too. India only treats 40% of its sewage. In a country of a billion people, that a lot of sewage going into the environment.
