Ventura County Sheriff's Department and Cannabis

Friday afternoon I spent the day in Ojai at WeedCon. The first person I ran into at the event was the Sheriff’s deputy who was overseeing the event from a law enforcement perspective.

So I decided to put him on camera to see how his first cannabis event experience was going – what was his expectation in advance of the event, and how did the reality of the event and the people who attended the event differ from his perception, if at all?

We also touched on dispensaries in Ojai (there are 3), delivery in Ventura County, keeping up with the the ever changing regulations, and more.

What I liked was how he has never smoked cannabis, doesn’t have a very positive historical opinion of cannabis, but is seeing things that may change his opinions. He also stated that whatever he thinks of cannabis and people who smoke it, the law trumps all. So if the law says it’s legal, then he’s going to enforce the law.

Engage with people who have different opinions. Listen. Learn. Educate. Advocate. rinse and repeat…

The Borderline had 500 people attending an event yet had no officers on location but this event had 200-300 and had 4 officers at the location.

if it’s legal there is nothing to enforce. why the police? duh, it’s not legal, else there’d be nothing to enforce. drinking water at times can be legal, for now. Idiocracy, documentary of the future, happening now.

Kudos to this officer of the law! His offer to be balanced and respect what the new law states (which is what the people voted for) is admirable. But the proof is in the pudding. His enforcement teams actions in the future will confirm or override a well prepared speech.

He thinks cannabis use might increase domestic violence? That’s clueless. His first statement was correct:
    "It isn’t a fair comparison."

Not because it has been illegal, though, but because one is a deadly poison that makes people violent and depressed. The other, a plant that contains compounds that have been in your body since the day you were born.

You might be anticipating a funny, "I told you so!" moment, but that hardly seems fitting when millions of tokers still live under threat of prison in the "land of the free". "Home of the brave", too, I’ve heard, but afraid of a plant.
