Cannabis legalization linked to 94% spike in ER visits for traffic injuries: report

New data shows a possible alarming trend when it comes to cannabis use and traffic incidents. A joint study from Ottawa researchers suggests that since cannabis became legal, more people are ending up in hospital emergency departments.

“Since 2010, there has been a very, very large increase in cannabis involvement and traffic injury visits in Ontario. And if you actually look at how that changes year to year going into legalization, this is increasing. This is a growing problem over time,” said Dr. Daniel Myran, lead author of the study.

Data shows that after cannabis became legal, there was a 94 per cent increase in the number of emergency department visits for traffic injuries where cannabis was involved. When COVID-19 happened, there was an even larger jump of 223 per cent when compared to the pre-legalization period.

Global News’ health reporter Katherine Ward has more of the details.

The fact is that smokers are as selfish, disingenuous, hypocritical and murderous as any drunk or other addict.

They’ll NEVER own up to it.

Even after they’ve murdered someone with their car, bike, scooter etc.

As monstrous as the next pig.

  7. John Titor II on September 11, 2023 at 5:24 am

That sort of reminds me about Pascal Robidas of Radio-Canada "informing" us that 98 % of indoor cannabis cultures belong to the Asian mafia… Today 94 % about "poisoning", on cannabis, euh…

So who’s living in an "artificial" world, again?? … Poor little traumatized/instrumentalized children! Halloween lasts all year long nowadays.

It doesn’t have much at all w traffic accidents. Marijuana is a baby herb really. If anyone thinks Marijuana is a harmful drug, WELL ITS NOT A DRUG!!!! For the most part it relaxes u, certain kinds will help u sleep. Marijuana shldv NEVER been on schedule/ controlled substances. U wld have to have major brain damage to think its harmful.

Okay so..as a regular user of cannabis, for pain which I might add.
TAKING ANY AMOUNT.OF WEED DOES NOT TELL YOU TO GET BEHIND THE WHEEL….
    ITS LOGIC SENSE
YOU TAKE ANY INTOXICATING SUBSTANCES YOU DO NOT OPERATE ANY HEAVY MACHINERY..
I’m also a regular user of medications from pain relievers, to muscle relaxants to inflammatory to name a few…
AND AGAIN NONE OF THESE TELL ME TO DO ANYTHING THAT WOULD PUT PEOPLE IN DANGER.

CHOOSING TO DO INCOHERENT THINGS WHILE UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ANYTHING IS DUMB.
HOWEVER, MANY PEOPLE DOMT NEED INFLUENCES OF INTOXICANTS TO DO ANYTHING INCOHERENTLY STUPID…
WE LIVE IN AN ERA OF THE MORE STUPID THE MORE VIEWS.
SO BEFORE WE GO BLAMMING OTHER AREAS, LETS TAKE IT TO WHERE IT COUNTS….

Sorry but this as equivalent to a man saying "I don’t how.she got pregnant" or "ot just happened, I don’t know"
REALITY CHECK NO ONE HELD ANYTHING TO YOUR HEAD TO MAKE YOUR DECISIONS..
SO DONT MAKE STUPID ONES AND LETS KEEP EVERYONE ALIVE ❀

  34. A Felder on September 11, 2023 at 5:59 am

Man make it legal leave people alone or make it illegal and call it a day.

  35. Salgood Sam on September 11, 2023 at 5:59 am

Yeah, that’s at best correlation they didn’t do any deeper work to prove a causal relationship.

And the cause here be it stoned or not, is arrogant idiocy. Not the drugs but the fool who choses to drive impaired.

  36. Brad fitz on September 11, 2023 at 5:59 am

All the pot heads freaking out on the thread.

  39. david B on September 11, 2023 at 6:01 am

they hardly tested for it before legalization. You don’t have to be a statistician to figer that one out.

  40. ShitWrangler on September 11, 2023 at 6:02 am

Even though Canada has the best test pool for such a study, if anyone remembers our pandemic modeling, we have lost all credibility when it comes to proven data driven scientific results.
I’d await multiple American studies coming out contradicting this nonsense, coupled with their highway driving guidelines already demonstrating far less lethal outcomes especially relative to booze.

Can your report actual data? This news is 92% less factual.

  44. Winston Smith on September 11, 2023 at 6:06 am

Can you prove it?? Like human causing all the fire devastation, that is shown in Wildfire Statically released data.

  45. Alex on September 11, 2023 at 6:06 am

"947 604 traffic injury ED visits … 426 (0.04%) had documented cannabis involvement and 7564 (0.8%) had documented alcohol involvement."

Since Global neglected to mention the *real numbers,* I thought I’d help them do their job (provide information and context).

  46. Nigel Connell on September 11, 2023 at 6:07 am

There was also a big increase in the total number of people using cannabis…

  47. Walter Hason on September 11, 2023 at 6:08 am

This is news from the government, so I would not put a lot of gravity to anything they say. ilii

  48. DeluxeSoccerFormation on September 11, 2023 at 6:09 am

Let’s study the difference between alcohol impaired driving and cannabis impaired driving. Both are bad. No one should be driving under the influence of ANYTHING.

  49. Toronto Citizen on September 11, 2023 at 6:11 am

If you are driving impaired and kill someone, the automatic charge should be first degree murder.

  50. Golden Hippie63 on September 11, 2023 at 6:11 am
