Would everyone smoke WEED if it were legal?

Marijuana is illegal in Romania, but according to one Romanian, it’s a popular drug. In this discussion, we hear two viewpoints about legalization.

A Hungarian woman living in Romania slightly disagrees with the claim, “Marijuana should be legal.” She believes marijuana’s harmful effects, like memory loss and impaired attention, would become widespread if it were legal. While she notes the ill effects of marijuana, she says, “I know I would like it and would use it again and again” if it were legal. She believes people would be afraid to leave their homes for fear of skirmishes with marijuana users who couldn’t control their actions.

On the other side, a Romanian gentleman agrees with the claim. He says marijuana has positive qualities, like cell regeneration and stress reduction. “People smoke a lot of weed here,” he says, including body-builders like him. He argues that legalization would lead to safer marijuana for the public.

If you don’t know what CHS is and you smoke weed everyday you need to do your research. And CHS is deadly, there’s a current epidemic especially since legalization, not enough people are addressing it. We were not educated enough on the damaging effects of regular, long term marijuana use. As someone who still smokes myself, it can be quite safe if you do your research, but more studies on marijuana still must be done. Nothing in life is completely risk free. There are benefits, but there are naturally drawbacks too. CHS being one of them and it’s deadly, very painful. Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome.

Now that weed has been legal in South Africa for a couple of years I can safely say life isn’t better like how they said it would be. I think it’s worse now with how it’s been overly normalised.

  3. j swets on September 28, 2023 at 7:46 am

If the only negative side effect that you can remember is memory loss, you definitely should not smoke marijuana. The poor girl is so sold on propaganda that she cannot think hypothetically about the topic.

Both of their arguments are weak. You should talk about this with people who are more educated on the subject

I think it should be legal. Good tax source, takes revenue away from gangs. It probably has other uses (byproducts, fabric etc).
    Here’s the twist:
Lots of jobs test for drugs. So it filters who wants jobs vs who doesn’t, in situations where jobs are scarce then the jobs get filled by better quality of individual.

I’m in favor of decriminalization. I’m against legalizing it because
    1. I don’t like the idea of the State making money off of mind altering substances that affect it’s constituents.
    2. we don’t know enough about the benefits/advantages of it. More testing(pretty testing) needs to happen
    3. I’m leery of the power of corporate marketing selling mind-altering drugs to the populace for recreational purposes.

Before people bring up alcohol… I am against the State having their own state run liquor stores. Corporate marketing of alcohol in the USA has been very effective and we see much greater episodes of binge drinking here compared to many other countries

Strong agree. It has been proven to be effective with a variety of health ailments with little side effects (cancer and cancer related treatments, digestive, bowel and bladder issues like colitis, chronic pain disorders, etc) and America still won’t legalize it…I wonder why…

I ain’t a smoker never will be, but as long as alcohol and cigarettes are legal and gets sold literally everywhere weed should be legal.

Cannabis induced psychosis is very real and can be severe. A close friend gets it when she uses any amount of cannabis. She has ended up naked in the street getting tased by the police (no joke).

  12. Andy Jarman on September 28, 2023 at 7:56 am

The spirit gin acquired the appellation "Mother’s Ruin" and was featured in cartoons drawn in the 1700s by the political cartoonist Hogarth as a critique of the social ills of industrialisation.

The attempt by the USA to prevent the gin palaces of the 1700s reappearing by outright banning alcohol sales during the Great Depression provided a profitable black market and created speak easies.

Better to regulate through licensing? Assures quality control and moderation of supply.

Supply moderation in areas where it is taken up as a response to social or economic issues then becomes possible.

    Prohibition merely promotes rebellion.

The girls is so right. People smoking pot are well known of beating eachother up… Let’s just use alcohol that makes them peaceful.

  16. Julius Stark on September 28, 2023 at 8:00 am

Whether or not you like or had weed, no matter what positive or negative effects it has, I believe it should be legal for person freedom reasons and because the drug war has caused far more damage to our society. We have prohibition as an example of how criminalizing a substance only benefits criminals who profit from its sale/distribution and doesn’t stop people who want it from getting it.

I smoked pot for 40 years , now that I watch states legalizeing it , and corporate growing is the only way I can use legally ,
    I quit ! I’m in a medical state .
You have to pay a doctor for q prescription, the pay high prices for hot house grown corporate farms ,
I’m done , legalize it out right , let us grow our own .

  21. Saccaed on September 28, 2023 at 8:13 am

Framing of "smoke" weed I think unfortunately misses edible consumption. For example the smoke related concerns largely do not apply to edibles and topicals. Non smoked product only slightly came up and those are at least as important in a discussion about cannabis.

  22. Aleric c on September 28, 2023 at 8:13 am

99% of the people I know DONT smoke pot, but every person I do know that smokes pot thinks EVERYONE else does it or wants to do it and are just afraid of being arrested.

  23. cool magool on September 28, 2023 at 8:15 am

This woman is providing uninformed opinions, and almost nothing based on the evidence; she even admits that she is not well informed. Sweeping statements like where it is legal, "everyone abuses it", are obviously false, not everyone uses cannabis, regardless of it’s legality. There is no evidence that supports the claim that it damages memory, in fact there is well documented evidence that it acts as a neuroprotectant (not for everyone as individuals can vary greatly in their tolerances and physiology). She also claims that it disrupts attention; for me this claim is personal as I have ADHD and if it wasn’t for my prescription cannabis, I would not have been able to complete my undergrad and postgrad study (in health science, not a pseudo academic field – choose from any of the grievance fields such as gender studies etc.). Regarding her first claim about memory, cannabis has not had any impacts on my ability to encode or retrieve information to/from memory). If people could grow their own cannabis, they would know exactly what was going into it – no need to trust government or private corporations; let’s face is pharmaceutical corporations are as trustworthy as governments, that is to say not trustworthy. In its natural state, cannabis should not cause any harm – look at the studies on the "entourage effect". In short, it is a broad spectrum effect that is synergistic as opposed to now being able to OD on THC (only) concentrates. The CBD prevents psychosis which may be caused by THC. Before THC concentrates were available, cannabis had no LD50 rating – for perspective, water, sugar, caffeine, and alcohol all have an LD50 rating. LD50 means it elicits a lethal response in 50% of the population that ingest it. Cannabis has been used by humans for tens of thousands of years (possibly hundreds of thousands), it evolved alongside humans as they evolved – if it was a major danger, the body count would indicate this. Regarding her claim that government regulation of alcohol doesn’t produce safer alcohol is patently false; before there was regulation and control over quality, back yard stills produced alcoholic drinks that made people blind.

There is lots of debate about the legalization of marijuana, so I thought this was an interesting claim to try.

  25. Christopher Giustolisi on September 28, 2023 at 8:16 am

It should be legal but not everyone would smoke it. Many would try but you still couldn´t drive or operate heavy equipment under influence.

  26. Cowboy Joe on September 28, 2023 at 8:18 am

alcohol is legal in US……there are millions of Americans that don’t drink. I reject the argument, people are already using it, so we should just make it legal…….

Weed is legal in Netherlands since many years, and NO far from everyone smokes there.

  28. David Smolinski on September 28, 2023 at 8:22 am

Weed is free. I don’t smoke it. I help make it to study plants. It’s the fastest growing plant I’ve seen. It’s easy to grow. I have an uncle who grows it, but doesn’t sell or use it.

Girl. You really should learn about effects of marijuana first of all. Just compare with other things we are getting for relaxation. Just google it what are the benefits of marijuana you will find the real reality.

  32. Greg Schlosser on September 28, 2023 at 8:24 am

I would’ve said that smoking weed and tobacco are carcinogenic, because anytime you burn something and breathe in the smoke into your lungs, you are breathing in carcinogens.

  33. Alin-Ionut Borcan on September 28, 2023 at 8:24 am

So many, I find, don’t have a clue what weed does to you, most are from what they heard and their own ideea based solely on hearsay

  39. Mark Vogel on September 28, 2023 at 8:30 am

Deschedual it. Legalization just benefits idiots and gives governments taxes.

  40. Justin on September 28, 2023 at 8:30 am

legalizing marijuana probably reduces use i think. part of the appeal of weed is that its a taboo (at least w/r/t the youth) so if its legalized its less of a temptation for a rebellious individual. but maybe if thats true it leave a gap open for experimentation and they would start with something worse?

  41. HJ GE on September 28, 2023 at 8:31 am

The girl is straight up factually wrong. Countries where weed has been legalized have fewer cases of weed abuse and normal use is about the same as in other comparable countries. Pretty much all the scary pictures people have painted over the years about weed, are just fearmongering.

Just compare some of the numbers from the Netherlands to that of surrounding countries.

  42. Weirdest Budday on September 28, 2023 at 8:31 am

I would use alcohol as my argument. That stuff is far much worse for you than marijuana and it’s legal everywhere. You’re going to tell me people would abuse and smoke weed more than people drink alcohol?

  43. Wesley Fleming on September 28, 2023 at 8:33 am

Smoking weed is way better than drinking alcohol. I have seen alcohol destroy more lives and families than pot ever will. We all have our vices…

  44. Happymouth on September 28, 2023 at 8:34 am

Hey Peter Boghossian, if you see this comment…

What if you started with the first person explaining and pulled everyone off their lines into a smaller circle so the participants don’t have to yell? and then having them go back (or to other lines depending on how persuasive the person was) and continuing like that? I just think the opinions would be more conducive if people could talk at a normal level.

  45. Ferocious Gustafson on September 28, 2023 at 8:35 am

  46. Monster Plasma on September 28, 2023 at 8:35 am

It’s legal in my country (South Africa). There are weed shops located in commercial shopping districts but I almost never see anyone in them. CBD is sold in pharmacies. It’s not a big deal and nobody here think it is anymore. Hard drugs and alcohol are way bigger problems. I don’t think hard drugs should be legal.

  47. NoriMori on September 28, 2023 at 8:38 am

I live in Canada, where weed has been legal for years. There are weed shops everywhere now! But I can assure you not everyone uses it just because it’s legal. I haven’t even tried it!

  48. jsonmedia on September 28, 2023 at 8:40 am

I think the main problem weed is that its too powerful now for the main consumer, it generally breeds laziness & contentment with your life being crap.

  49. KeyofG on September 28, 2023 at 8:41 am

For me it’s a question of overall harm.

If it is illegal people are arrested for possession, more/longer interactions with police occur, they lose their jobs and likely struggle to find another, they consume unregulated. I think an argument can made that the solution is worse than the problem.

If it is legal, we remove all of the issues with it being illegal and the solution being worse than the problem, but more people will use it. However, I think it’s fair to argue most who fall into that population difference would tend to be casual users. For many, it would also serve as a healthier alternative to vices, such as pills, alcohol, and tobacco.

Also, her point about people being "high" would lead to more violent/aggressive behaviors is just flat wrong. That’s why I don’t like it being phrased as "high" as this phrase lumps it into generally being high, rather than being high on weed. Anyone with any experience being around weed smokers knows that they are pacifist as hell when high, unlike many other types of highs.

  50. Claritas on September 28, 2023 at 8:41 am

Cannabis is harmful, dangerous and addictive.
But it should still be legal!

No one who wants to get an education/go to school should use it.
But it should still be legal!

Use of Cannabis Shouldn’t Always be a matter of personal choice (like when people go crazy from smoking it all day everyday for years)
But it should still be legal.
