Growing Established vs Breeding Your Own Cannabis Genetics

Growing Established vs Breeding Your Own Cannabis Genetics

Established Strains: Advantages
If growing a small number of plants
Options for experimenting are minimal
Great for those starting out growing
Provides an idea of what to expect with cannabis
Growing the same established strain allows for growers to refine their skills
Known genetics provide a source of consistency

Established Strains: Disadvantages
May not have the characteristics you desire
End product is the same as what you can simply purchase
Reduces your ability to experiment

Creating Your Own Strain: Advantages
The exact traits you desire can be bred/created
Can increase your interest in the growing process
Allows for the potential to create something unique and different

Creating Your Own Strain: Disadvantages
Can be very time consuming
No guarantees of success

Typically requires multiple growing locations to isolate male plants

Both first the established then the other & cross pollinate with the male clones you locked away & pulled after the sacs developed

I have a few friends that swap clones of whatever we pick up so there’s generally 2 or 3 I keep growing from clone until the genetics get tired, right now the go too has been a cut of durbans poison and then 2 clone only crosses. One is of unknown parentage with a random name it was given. Then the other cross was apparently a silver haze x super skunk we just call it SS. Right now from seed I’m doing a fem blue dream and strawberry cough from Canuck seeds and I got a few freebie Afghani#1 and lucked out with a female and 2 males. For fun I had a couple autos this year cause I had never tried autos. Pk and chem og from Oasis. I femmed the one PK, and then I want to dust a bud of my afi with it for a fem to fem cross. From there I’m wanting to cross the male afi into a pk auto and the plan is to backcross the fem x fem with an afi male, and backcross the male afi x PK back to the auto PK. And this may be a bit of a struggle, but I want to try and breed out 2 IBLs of something resembling eachother, in both an auto and photo period. They are both indica or indica leaning, from current and past experience with the Afghan#1 it’s a stable plant, the pk from the research I’ve done and from others grow journals I’ve looked at it’s a mostly stable plant. They have similar node spacing and somewhat similar but not identical structure with the afi having that unique "beach ball" shape. The pk seems to have good tight buds on it and a good amount of crystals. Both deep green… My Afghan hasn’t gone into bud yet, but I remember larger colas and a bit fluffier buds and a more earthy terp profile compared to the Pink Kush… My hope is a slightly earthy more fruity/berry Kush profile with medium to hard denseness, smaller in stature with that beach ball look with tight internodes and a larger cola structure than the PK… As this is really my first attempt at this sort of thing I decided to go big or go home. I want something similar not necessarily identical in an auto and photo 😂 which will be the task I guess to maintain 2 IBLs in the same basic direction based on the same genetics…

I enjoy a majority of your videos.
I’ve bought seeds once & made seeds twice, I won’t need to buy seeds unless it’s an heirloom or super exotic genetics(greasemonkey).
    Cheers folks.
