After partial cannabis legalization, what are the pros and cons? | DW News

A new law partially legalizing cannabis has come into effect in Germany.
At midnight, hundreds gathered in central Berlin to celebrate the moment. Under the legislation, people over 18 can now possess up to 25 grams in public for personal use and cultivate up to 3 plants at home. But the legislation has its critics, who point to health and law-and-order concerns.
Germany’s conservative opposition says they’ll revoke the law, if they get into power.

Would people in Germany rather see a few people mingling about smoking their cannabis or would they rather have a bunch of people sitting in front of their business shooting up with hypodermic needles .

  24. @Hajo87-tz7hz on April 29, 2024 at 11:30 am

There’s nothing to celebrate at all. Criminalisation is still ongoing. If you’re apprehended by the police with cannabis in your possession, they can still charge you, if you decline to give up the source. Before the end of summer there won’t be any freedom for weed smokers. And also you can’t grow more than three plants. What if they’re all male? The associations you’d have to join to grow them on a more professional basis, are to be approved by the municipal administration in the first place. There won’t be any coffeeshops. It’s a sham.

  25. @DimiterAngelicheff on April 29, 2024 at 11:31 am

this law will make people who are not smokers to become such, which is the hidden idea of this legalization. I mean regular tobacco smokers!

    ich liebe Germany!!

  27. @Dadember on April 29, 2024 at 11:32 am

Germans realise this is a fantastic opportunity to generate another tax revenue stream by regulating a harmless extremely productive and versatile plant. Congratulations Germany for the smart decision

Weed is a gateway drug? Lot’s of people that smoke a lot of weed end up reducing/quitting both smoking and drinking. And they’re the healthiest they’ve been in their adult life.

  42. @nitingupta8605 on April 29, 2024 at 11:51 am

While I’m happy with the legalization I don’t agree with the gentleman being interviewed that legalization will not increase usage among youngsters (adult). For minors, it won’t change much – they will have similar/lesser access to cannabis as they do to alcohol. Legalization will certainly improve the quality of the product available so that’s good.

I’ve recently started micro-dosing with cannabis edibles and it helps me with stress and anxiety so I’m happy to see more liberal laws. I hope a certain distinction can be made between smoking cannabis and consuming it as an edible – the latter is significantly better for the health without the risks that come with smoking. In fact, I think cannabis edibles may be significantly safer than all other substances available on the market for either medical/recreational purposes.

  43. @Android_MT1983 on April 29, 2024 at 11:52 am

Same as we have introduced in Malta (EU).. people who used to smoke whatever the drug dealer sold to them are now smoking good quality and tested weed and can choose!!

  44. @paultaylor7947 on April 29, 2024 at 11:53 am

got chucked out of a downtown bar once because the barmaid had to come over to our table to tell us we were unrecognizable behind our smoke screen

  45. @Jae.1up on April 29, 2024 at 11:53 am

  46. @slin9810 on April 29, 2024 at 11:54 am

There never was a ‘war on drugs’, it’s a war on people.

  47. @coffeepot3123 on April 29, 2024 at 11:55 am

Damn i didn’t know Germany was so eager to self destruct, red light districts, nude saunas with both genders, shutting down nuclear power completely etc and now this.
Keep playing up the war in the 40’s to shun the new generation and remove all "limiters" , the country will be a slum in the coming decades.
And just as an offshoot comment on this topic: People that smoke weed are not someone you want in your life.

  48. @david94549 on April 29, 2024 at 12:00 pm

Kids could take cars and alcohol and drink drive round the streets if they wanted to, and yes they probably do in some cases, but it’s so irregular. Making weed legal doesn’t change their ability to start consuming it, it is already so readily available in many parts of the world and the dangerous things already available to them that are already controlled through the regular acts of society are proof that it’s not such a concerning issue

  49. @user-iu5fo2ke2p on April 29, 2024 at 12:02 pm

    It should be legal everywhere

  50. @PopPo-zh9up on April 29, 2024 at 12:02 pm
