Cannabis Seed Germination Tutorial: Mel Frank & Derek Gilman / Ganjier

Enrollment is now open for the 2023 Ganjier Cannabis Certification Program at https://www.ganjier.com

Legendary breeder, cultivator, author, photographer, and Ganjier instructor Mel Frank literally wrote the book on cannabis cultivation with his seminal bestseller “The Marijuana Grower’s Insider’s Guide” in 1974.

Inducted into the Cannabis Breeders Hall of Fame in 2019, Mel’s award-winning photos, publications and cultivation techniques, spanning several decades, have become the cornerstone knowledge of any solid cannabis education.

We’re lucky to have him as a Ganjier course creator and instructor on cannabis plant botany, and in this tutorial, he teams up with Ganjier Director Derek Gilman to demonstrate tips, tricks and best practices about that all-important first step of germinating your cannabis seeds.

I terminated once and a plastic bag with paper towels exposed in the bag so they could grow. I put a LED light over it and they started growing upwards towards the light. It was really cool.

Excellent advice from a true legend. Great video and instruction from both. Back in the old days before internet you had to get your hands on a book and Mel wrote one in 1974. Thanks to all the old guys who wrote books lol.

Does anyone know a good place to get or buy good seeds. It’s been a long times since I’ve done this I’m trying to get back into it. Thanks.

For old seeds try 3 per cent peroxide 10 mls in 1/2 cup water let them just soak till they sink possible about 24 hrs then into this method may help

After many years of growing I’ve determined direct sowing is the king of methods. I would never do it any other way.

Oh wow! Mr. Frank in the flesh! I’m a devout Christian but if I weren’t, the gentleman would be one of my top 5 biggest inspirations(I’m a big fan but would never put Earthly things before God!).
Anyways, I’ve read everything Mr. Frank, Watson, Rosenthal, Cervantez, G, Mr. Nevil and a few more that elude me at the moment but needless to say, I’ve wanted to do the same as these legends have and cultivate the best buds! I’m so close to breeding Skunk back into the mix, I’m just missing very specific genetics and Mr. Frank knows what I’m talking about…..I’d give ANYTHING to sit down and find a mutually beneficial solution to obtaining said genetics!

I have my own Heirloom Purple Bud lineage as well as Todd McCormick (IBL)Skunk#1 growing out at the moment…but still no stink! My OG Afghani#1 came dormant and germinating slooooooooooowwwwwwwww! Grrrrrrrr…..

Anyways, this is the first video I’ve liked in many years here in YT! Good seeing you Mr. Frank! Best of wishes to you and your family!! ✌️

Way too much water? You can drown them? Definitely not the right way to germinate them?

  14. @CBe-ot8vu on May 26, 2024 at 3:23 pm

I use a brandy glass with paper towel stuck to the inside of the glass with water. I pull the paper towel away from the glass n drop seeds in then stick the paper towel back to the glass. Light doesn’t affect them at all. I can see the very moment the seeds pop and the root without disturbing them until i see they are ready to plant.

Great video so do you give out sample seeds out.
Im a disabled firefighter that smokes for pain. But never can find seeds wish I could grow my own

  16. @Wesmancan on May 26, 2024 at 3:25 pm

If you can’t germ them you can’t grow them. Period.

  17. @bitsurface5654 on May 26, 2024 at 3:26 pm

    20-year-old seeds? 👍👍👍

  18. @AliciaHope-pk9eu on May 26, 2024 at 3:27 pm

Just wasted good coin buying from Mediseedman
With the most convoluted set of germination instructions that need to be photographed to prove any disputes… bad bad seed with 1 thriving, 4 failing to thrive and 3 so weak they can’t bust out of their seed case so 8 out of forty seeds popped.. going back to tried and tested germination procedure

  20. @vsznry on May 26, 2024 at 3:30 pm

I got some auto Northern Lights on the way. just plan to do an at-home outdoor grow for fun lol
Using a Flame Broiler type bowl for the germination is genius. That plastic, clear lid is perfect.
Could also probably use same container for initial seedling stage too.

one of the best i have seen so far

  29. @bunzinthesun on May 26, 2024 at 3:41 pm

One way I saw that worked very well was to put a moist folded paper towel in a ziplock on its side that was not closed to allow air circulation. Seeds were removed as soon as roots shown so as not to risk tiny roots working their way through the paper towel layers and possibly rotting of the tender root. Then planted with the soil about 1/4" above the top of the seed in a small pot. The soil was a mix of 55% perlite, 35% coir and 10% worm castings. Lit with a multicolor LED panel, just a few inches from the top of the soil. The true leaves came out nice and dark and grew very fast; a little water was added daily. An interesting hack is to weigh the container daily, adding water with a Nalgene wash bottle A/R to maintain the same weight in the beginning. The soil with so much perlite is unlikely to get waterlogged regardless of the watering method, though. Many other methods undoubtedly work, but this worked the best of the methods I have seen.

  30. @johnboykin3128 on May 26, 2024 at 3:46 pm

Seed germination is unreliable and inconsistent when you are getting different types of seeds from different sources and the technique of verifying germination in a damp paper towel is a good way to avoid wasting time and resources.

  31. @punishthewicked5845 on May 26, 2024 at 3:47 pm

Float tech pop one at a time plant it to cube w/ tap-1/4” don’t wait longer and try not to touch it.pour it onto a split root riot then position

  34. @pimpinken8901 on May 26, 2024 at 3:53 pm

Tell ya what I’ve used the paper towel folded under a bowl for decades. Within two weeks I’d end up with a seedling about two inches long, move that to a turbo cloner for two weeks and then it’s big enough to go straight into hydroton with 100% success no rock wool needed just tap water. Except this year for whatever reason the paper towels just kills them can’t figure it out. They pop like normal that 1/2 mm tap root pokes out the shell and…. Nothing that’s it. I continue keeping the paper towel moist but I’m literally watering a corpse for weeks. I don’t understand it.

  35. @rorycubaking9572 on May 26, 2024 at 3:54 pm

great video, can i use standard rockwool from a builders merchant?

  36. @user-fn2eu4oj7y on May 26, 2024 at 3:56 pm

I’ve been gardening all my life. I have to laugh at how some people make it seem like there’s an extremely scientific way to sprout and grow pot plants. They’re just plants like any other plant . It’s not rocket science. Just plant in soil and they will grow

  37. @barrylockhart7215 on May 26, 2024 at 3:58 pm

Bro whoever the guy was the left was not careful with those seeds at all

  38. @shawnmurphy282 on May 26, 2024 at 3:58 pm

Light does not affect the germination of cannabis. The size of the seed tells the tale. As a general rule of thumb, the smaller the seed, the more likely it needs light to germinate.

  39. @YodaMan. on May 26, 2024 at 4:02 pm

i used to do the paper towel method. these days i just put them in the soil. more detail on that: i use a grow tent, cloth pots, and ocean forest soil, i hydrate and hand mix the soil before planting the seed, i use distilled water for about the first week then switch to ph balanced water.

after the soil is hydrated and the seed planted about half an inch down and lightly covered, i spray it down with more distilled water then cover it with a zippered sandwich bag, zipper left open and sprayed inside with water mist to keep the humidity over the seed while it germinates. once you see the seedling poking out you can remove the baggie. works great for me.

for newbies dont add nutrients to ocean forest soil. its fine out of the bag. you wont need nutrients for the first month just ph balanced water. after that appropriate nutrients, calmag, etc.. of your choice in appropriate amounts.

  40. @GeezerBoy65 on May 26, 2024 at 4:02 pm

If soaking then starting in my starting peat-based media, using my microscope, can I tell where on the seed the radicle will emerge? So that I can plant that end down from the start.

4-6hr in warm water with some microbes then into a starter cuber or direct in pot and keep temps around 75-80 and humidity over 75%.
