Grocery giant Loblaws lobbies Ontario government to change cannabis rules

Canada’s Loblaws has been lobbying Ontario’s Ford government to change the rules surrounding cannabis sales, to allow it to get into the marijuana market.

But, some fear if allowed, small businesses will be snuffed out by the grocery giant.

Global’s Queen’s Park bureau chief Colin D’Mello has the details.

When is enough? Galen Weston and his greedy shareholders are rich enough. This is greed at it’s worst. Piss on Loblaws.

  4. @4freess on May 26, 2024 at 3:40 pm

These guys have nothing positive to do with cannabis, and never supported it. What you have here is just some greedy suits trying to cash in.

  5. @doncaignou2589 on May 26, 2024 at 3:40 pm

    Not a good idea…

  6. @solkinar on May 26, 2024 at 3:40 pm

So are they going to try and fix the price of weed like they did bread?

  7. @user-iv8bm1dh3y on May 26, 2024 at 3:41 pm

If loblaws gets into weed market, I sure hope the quality improves.

  11. @tillyburton5402 on May 26, 2024 at 3:48 pm

Boycott spending there, I shop Safeway and Walmart. I would rather the American company rip me off…I expect it, but a Canadian own company screwing Canadian for a profit, well I still choice as a consumer, and I chose American own company to make money off me. Boycott all Loblaws own stores, can’t rip you off, if you don’t spend there.

  12. @Francois_Dupont on May 26, 2024 at 3:48 pm

they are already selling "adult" product like alcohol and tabacco.

  13. @andrewmacleod850 on May 26, 2024 at 3:48 pm

Mabey they should not continue selling Alcohol the way they do in grocery stores the open advertising to children easy access to children lol i smell some some fuckery in the air . So maybe all the Alcohol should also only be allowed to be sold in the beer store and the lcbo.

  14. @jasonpaints on May 26, 2024 at 3:49 pm

  16. @user-yj9gl3ur6c on May 26, 2024 at 3:52 pm

Does really really think that people want to go and buy what will be overpriced cannabis while buying overpriced groceries? Guaranteed that they will sell some β€˜gourmet’ crappy cannabis products.

  17. @mrpresident8798 on May 26, 2024 at 3:52 pm

These corporations need to be stopped now. There’s a limit for greed.

  23. @peterjeffery8495 on May 26, 2024 at 3:55 pm

I don’t want Cannibas in Loblaws or Service Ontario in Walmart…EVER!

  24. @Homegrown_Values on May 26, 2024 at 3:56 pm

Loblaws needs to calm the …. Down. I could only imagine their pricing schemes. Their product would be no name seeds and stems πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

  25. @mariedickson6119 on May 26, 2024 at 3:57 pm

    Nonononononono

  26. @Corrinaxox on May 26, 2024 at 3:57 pm

Can we all just decide to no longer support this greedy, irritating company. Loblaw company contines to show its true values and priorities as it has the past few years .

  27. @lanatonikane3532 on May 26, 2024 at 3:58 pm

who wants to buy weed at loblaws?

  28. @user-pp4ve6qo1b on May 26, 2024 at 3:58 pm

Pot is SO EASY to grow, I don’t understand why people spend so much $$$ buying it when you can easily harvest a kilogram of bud from just $130 worth of seeds.

  29. @mariedickson6119 on May 26, 2024 at 4:01 pm

Will never go to Loblaws from today😑😑😑😑😑😑😑

  30. @Meeksballs on May 26, 2024 at 4:01 pm

What they want to price fix weed to?

  31. @mytenthdimension on May 26, 2024 at 4:02 pm

Loblaws wants to monopolize another industry. Surprise surprise.

But the double standard for selling weed vs. beer/wine is ridiculous. Let the free market sort it out…

  32. @madidavis4934 on May 26, 2024 at 4:03 pm

Loblaw really can’t help but try to get their greedy little fingers on everything in Canada; Groceries, pharmacies, gas, products…

  33. @dixonpinfold2582 on May 26, 2024 at 4:06 pm

Why is everyone reacting by calling Loblaws greedy? I don’t get it.
Exactly how many products can a store sell before it merits that label? I need a number.
Remember when they added rotisserie chicken? Was that ‘greedy’? Help me out here.
Calling them greedy seems pointlessly resentful and small.

  34. @JessT-vg7ib on May 26, 2024 at 4:07 pm

I want the government to allow Loblaws to sell guns.

  35. @user-qe2ro3yi2b on May 26, 2024 at 4:07 pm

Between corporate bullying, πŸ’© quality, price gouging and in some stores availability ~ they’re also forcing a return to old sKo0L ways for so many.

  36. @benfurber4126 on May 26, 2024 at 4:08 pm

  41. @miradinic870 on May 26, 2024 at 4:11 pm

So they don’t rip enough profit from food stuffs and other grocery stores staples? Will they go after other kinds of merchandise to pull into their stores? Does their greed know no bounds?
