The Godfather Of Sour Diesel Pot Returns To New York

Joe Murray, the legendary grower behind the cult chronic Sour Diesel, made his name in the black market 20 years ago. Now he’s trying to find sweet success in a chaotic legal cannabis industry.

The man known in New York’s weed scene as “Asshole Joe,” a semi-affectionate moniker for the silver-haired, craggy-voiced 50-year-old pot legend Joe Murray, grew and sold cannabis in the city when it was really illegal. And he has the stories to prove it.

In 1994, a few years before Murray would popularize the cannabis varietal known as Sour Diesel, one of the most-sought-after strains of marijuana that fetched as much as $15,000 a pound back in the day, his best friend was brutally murdered—his head was bashed in with a hammer while trying to collect money owed to him. In the years that followed, Murray set up multiple cannabis grows in apartments in Manhattan, warehouses in Brooklyn, and one inside a Chinatown bordello. Whenever Snoop Dogg came to New York, Murray always had a special stash of the hip-hop mogul’s favorite bud called RBK.

#letsgrowtogether I am JJ Hawkins & AJ Sour Diesel talks about our Upstate Northern Lights before his Sour Diesel! Our Northern Lights was legendary even to todays standards, 1 Oz Buds $400 $1k a QP $3,400 a Lb if we knew we could of gotten more in the city we would have taken it there too! Virginia Tech paid $400 a Oz all the way up to $6,400 a Lb! Dr. Green Thumb says I can’t believe we’ve moved over 100k already this year ourselves and we had teams of guys all over the east coast moving it from 98-08 Lime Green nugs Orange hairs covered in frost 1 hit washed over my body like a waterfall instantly relaxing me from head to toe! I was a professional athlete martial artist sport bike riding import car engine building mad scientist first time I was able to focus on one thing in my life, I felt it instantly and had to have that in my life! My mentor Frog gave me a book in 98 called How to grow cannabis. I had been growing out door since 92 but this book opened my mind to many other methodologies and deficiencies nutrient types water lights temperature etc… I am forever in his families debt. Frog turned 75 this year! Mike is another mentor he’s 69 taught me a lot about hunting, growing, life in general! Gerald Brock taught me how to carry myself how to treat others how to build houses and how to be a great friend his son Jesse & I were like brothers at one time he’s the Godfather to my daughters and lifelong friend he taught me about cannabis buds and how to analyze the buds in 1997 when Joey sold me my first brick of seeded Mexican! Jesse said what do you see I said a brick of pot! He said no look closer, do you see those red hairs, Yes do you see the greenish brown plant material, Yes do you see those shiny things on the plant material, Yes Those shiny things are what gets you high! 1997 at 15 years old I was enlightened by this knowledge of this plant! Nobody had ever explained it like Jesse did! First time I met Jesse I was dragging him out of a motor vehicle accident where he was fighting with first responders because he didn’t want his pants cut 28inch bell bottoms worth thousands of dollars, I was a jr fireman called a Rescuer! I intervened and told the medics the bottoms were so big no need to cut them when all your trying to accomplish is visual inspection of lower extremities! They pulled up his pant legs saw no need to cut them no injuries visible! We been friends ever since! State police landed in my mentors back yard one year that’s a crazy story, We had a large warehouse grow in Albany but only 3 of us left alive good story! 30 story apartment building growing Northern Lights 20 Stories of grow 10 Stories of rental property and this is just the beginning!

Sour Diesel is my all time favorite strain haven’t found any in years and found the reason the strain died out a few years ago was because of all cheap weed coming out of California at the time… I hope sour Diesel makes its way back into the market

  29. @ryanpecoraro8231 on December 7, 2024 at 1:17 am

It’s good no doubt about it but it’s not the same as back in the day the smell I remember one nug would stink up the entire house

  30. @weallbelearningsomestuff101 on December 7, 2024 at 1:22 am

Northern Lights and basically any kush variety is preferred. Organic only please.

  31. @ken23493 on December 7, 2024 at 1:23 am

I remember when sour hit the Bronx in the early 2000s and the cops were searching us and they found the sour D and smelled it and said “where did you get this from?” And I swear to everything the cop put it in his pocket and didn’t charge us

  32. @fidlplr6536 on December 7, 2024 at 1:24 am

I grew clones from a cut of a Sour Diesel X AK47 that originated in the Philadelphia area back in the early 2000’s and it was by far the best pot i ever grew and smoked. Ever since then I have been looking for the real OG Sour D but have come up short. Many claim to have it but nothing has proven to compare to the real deal. I’m giving Humboldt SC’s Cali Sour D a try this grow cycle….we shall see…

  33. @ARPorganics on December 7, 2024 at 1:26 am

I got some sour diesel a few months ago. We grew it at an indoor grow facility I work at located in Northern California. It didn’t taste good at all. But it smelled and looked amazing.

  34. @TheMnoer48 on December 7, 2024 at 1:26 am

Whenever someone says they have sour diesel nowadays it generates an involuntary eye roll. There will never be anything like the original
