Historic First Oregon Cannabis Growers´ Fair

Smuggle Portland hit the road to visit the first Oregon Cannabis Growers´ Fair, in Salem. History was made as it was the first time ever that cannabis plants were exhibited at a State Fair. We interviewed our favorite exhibitors, including Daniel Grimm from Uplifted Farms, the 1st place winner for the best sativa and indica plants. Legendary growers Ed Rosenthal and Farmer Tom Lauerman were part of the jury. Other favorites were The Good Gum Company, My Urban Greenhouse, Oregon Elite Seeds and Stoney Girl Gardens.

My name’s Brandon Cassens. I’m with My Urban Greenhouse. We develop and manufacture sustainable hydroponic growing systems designed around getting individual users the ability to grow their own at home. We have a four-plant system that only takes up two feet by two feet, so it fits in any closet. They take about 10 minutes a week of maintenance. You just have to add the water to the bottom of the reservoir and then also add one scoop of the nutrient powder that we provide with the kit. It’s a beautiful plan and everybody should be able to grow their own.

Stoney Only is our dispensary. Stoney Girl Gardens is our seed company. Port Amsterdam University is our school and I don’t think we have even come up with a name for our cancer-treatment center. We teach full grow courses, everything from seed to processing. We teach how to make a cannabis oil that I used to cure my cancer. We teach how to do cooking. We teach how to open your own dispensary because we kicked this industry off and we want everyone to be able to participate. The bar shouldn’t be so high that you can’t pull yourself up by your bootstraps and make something out of nothing. Everyone should be doing this.

My name’s Toby. I own Oregon Elite Seeds. I’ve been doing this almost nine months. I’ve been growing for about 20 years. Mark Twain had a really good saying back in the day where when there’s a gold rush that’s the time to be in the pick and shovel business. This is the time to be in the pick and shovel business. Growing is the basic start of everything. You can’t have nothing without a seed, so I feel that this is kind of like a pioneer, you know jumping out in the forefront and bringing seeds to people. Sometimes it’s really hard because it is still illegal in certain ways, so it is tough.

Hi. I’m Larissa Kama. I’m the creator and co-owner of The Good Gum Company. We specialize in cannabis infused chewing gum called ganja gum. The THC it’s absorbed through the soft tissue of your mouth sublingually. It’s a nice light dose. It’s not anything heavy, so you can chew your gum and still operate. You can chew it as long as you want to or as little as you want to. It’s kind of a noncommittal thing. We recommend chewing it for at least a half an hour to get full effect.
