10 Mistakes to Avoid When Training Cannabis Plants!

Ten mistakes to avoid when training your cannabis plants

First, let’s give you some advice if you haven’t done any cannabis plant training before.

Don’t try and master all the techniques in one go, learn them one by one over time.

Additionally, you can’t train a cannabis plant by talking to it. Saying “sit”, “beg” and “roll over” will not change the way your plant behaves.

We would also advise you to only train the healthiest of your plants – training is stressful and plants need time to recover afterwards.

For that reason, our first common mistake is to carry out more than one training method at a time as that will have a fair chance of killing your plants.

The next common mistake is not carrying out any training, as this means you can’t optimise your growing space.

Fourth, top too early and you will stunt growth, while fifth, if you top too late, you’ll end up with a plant looking like a Christmas tree!

Aim to top after three to five nodes exist.

It is easy to snap branches if you try and train your plants when they are not sufficiently mature. Best done after topping and not when plants are young as they cannot deal with stress.
Fimming and defoliating must be done before flowering. Doing so once flowering occurs will hammer the yield.

Mainlining involves topping a plant a number of times. However, do this repeatedly when the plant growth is too young will end up taking the plant longer to recover, reduces air circulation and encourages mould and disease.

Don’t use ties that can damage your plants. When carrying out low stress training (LST) tie down the branches avoiding rigid plastic and metal and instead think about using bending clips.
It can be a very costly mistake to forget to support heavy cannabis buds. While breeding and genetics have helped increase the size of buds, increased branch strength is still lagging behind and a heavy crop of buds can lead to branches snapping.

Use trellises or a tomato cage as examples of effective support for cannabis plants.
While defoliation is good to let light through to critical areas of your cannabis plants, over-defoliation can do so much more harm than good.

Only remove leaves once a plant is mature enough and is full-on vegetating.
Don’t carry out high-stress training (HST) on weak or autoflowering plants as the growing period is too short to allow plants to recover afterwards.

Don’t be too worried though, cannabis plants can be pretty forgiving and provided you don’t make all the above mistakes, you should be okay.

Once you’re a bit more used to this you’ll start to prefer super cropping and I am not going into the details of why, it’s just a fact that we all come to if we do it long enough

As long as the plant is strong and healthy tie down about 6in outta dirt. That seems early but it will be fine.

“Full on” vegetation you prune. And “full on flower” you prune.
There’s also the final prune you do in the last week before harvest. A few days before flush.
Helps with flavor and scent, and is just a general prep.

My first growing auto was dark devil xl and I grew it outdoor without using anything else but water. In this video he says that the plant will look like a Christmas tree if you don’t top it at all and I’m thinking why is that an issue; my dark devil xl had massive buds and was really healthy even tho I didn’t used any training method and grew it with just water. I’ve planted the past few days a master kush and plan to grow it the same way, if you guys think I’m doing something wrong please hit me with a message I do appreciate advices

  31. @RenowlyOnDeAest on March 24, 2025 at 8:19 am

There are no "rules", if you want to be an "expert". Every genetic has its own specs and stress resistance. If you want to be a good grower, try, learn, fail, try again, learn, have 2 wins and one lost, try again…. Learn how your plant grows, watch it and observe, each genetic for its own, how its reacting on pure natural grow and different training methods.
Growing cannabis is like a hobby, and if you want to be good by your talent, you have to try and learn for yourself. I grew up the creepiest "constructions" by permanently cutting all 3-4 days in the first two months. Some gens died, some survived and grew bigger like anything else. Its experience about the individual plant.

  32. @troygach9228 on March 24, 2025 at 8:19 am

    Training or trimming???
To me training is tieing it or bending it….

  33. @tomdandymusicandeverythingelse on March 24, 2025 at 8:19 am

When your plant is halfway through the flowering phase, break it apart a little bit, where you cut it, then it will pump all its power into the buds… it’s an amazing plant. I learned this from a very old grower 🙏

  34. @Nedspaulding1234 on March 24, 2025 at 8:22 am

  36. @GA-Vic on March 24, 2025 at 8:26 am

Nooo, all of this is garbage! Each time you slice on a plant, it stunts and holds back your harvest time, by up to two weeks some times! The best way, is to let your plant get up to about 2 feet tall, then take it out of it’s container, dig a small trench in the soil, the same length as it, lay it down in the dirt, cover the whole stem(and rootball), wet it down and wait a couple days. All of the colas will grow upwards and they will all be as big as the top few buds.In harvest time, they all will be monsters. This is coming from an outdoor grower of 36 years.I normally would charge for this trick but i can’t stand the proliferance of nonsense regarding, the speeding up and yield of cannabis. You cannot speed up the growth cycle but you can fortify it with it’s full potiential in this one,tried-and-true way.In essence, by performing this one, crucial and pertainant action, you are actually "cloning" it. After about two weeks, you can remove and seperate each bud from the "mother plant" and then transplant them, (if necessarialy desired!) but remember, it will delay it’s cycle a bit. Also, give it time to generate roots first, before putting it in the ground!

  37. @JohnMoore-qv4vn on March 24, 2025 at 8:29 am

PLEASE. Your biggest mistake would be listening to this ai-generated "cannabis expert". Its not total bs, just lame half truths and worthless generalities. Why not watch a real narrator with real grow experience.

Is it absolutely necessary to train at all?

  39. @tinocorreia4001 on March 24, 2025 at 8:31 am

I’ve been using silica. And I am getting stems that are so thick.I don’t need any scrog netting. We have colas the size of soda cans. With Density. The silica allows for a larger uptick of nutrients as well

  47. @haze4307 on March 24, 2025 at 8:38 am

I top plants if its a plant from seed, but for general training from cuttings, all I do is pinch the stems so lower growth can catch up. I put plants into bloom when I have 6 or 7 stems all the same high and everything below the 3 top nodes is removed.
