“Making the Worst Mistake as a Nurse” #what

Source: @nurse.alexrn

Accidentally taking hospital medications home, especially if they are controlled drugs, is a serious issue for nurses. Controlled drugs are tightly regulated due to their high potential for abuse, addiction, or diversion. Hospitals have strict protocols for documenting, storing, and administering these medications, and any discrepancy—intentional or not—can trigger an investigation.

Even if it’s an honest mistake, removing controlled substances from a healthcare facility without proper authorization can be considered a breach of policy, professional standards, and in some cases, the law. It can raise concerns about drug diversion, compromise patient safety, and potentially jeopardize a nurse’s license or employment. That’s why it’s crucial to immediately report and document any such incident, no matter how minor it seems, to ensure transparency and maintain trust in clinical practice.

They’re so worried a out delendance but quick to put someone on much more dangerous drugs, broke ass system it’s exactly in the name it’s about control.

I’ve done this once. After finding it in my pocket I call my job and told them then drove 35 minutes back and returned it. I accepted the write up and willingly took a drug test. After that I learned to always empty my pockets before leaving work.

So easy to do as a nurse, especially in a hospital setting.

  5. @TDAEON on April 16, 2025 at 9:05 am

No one is perfect but if I may suggest…Always make it a habit to clear out your pockets before you leave for the day.

I can’t remember the dose of my prescription, but it must be pretty low- like 0.5mg- but Lorazapan doesn’t really affect me & it sounds like a big deal medication & I had no idea. I only get a few sometimes when I’m having a really bad time. Watched White Lotus this season thinking what is wrong with the Lorazapan I get because it ain’t nothing like that.

  7. @DemiMurgos on April 16, 2025 at 9:06 am

I hate to be nitpickiy, but how is it that some shop clerks have to do a full bag and pocket check before they are allowed to leave their shifts, but not nurses to avoid these things happening? ^^’

  8. @ReshMate on April 16, 2025 at 9:07 am

Put it in the fridge door with the rest of them and call the hospital and notify them. It’s all good.

  9. @alenauka5445 on April 16, 2025 at 9:07 am

Victoria Ratliff would be a terrible nurse then

Im actually suprised how nobody talks about white lotus here

  12. @Spoonin_toot_noodle on April 16, 2025 at 9:08 am

I once did this, it is not that big of a deal. Just called my manager, and we fixed it my next shift. Good thing I didn’t lose it in the laundry.

  13. @lolo0302 on April 16, 2025 at 9:08 am

And he did it for a skit…

  14. @uncleandy7983 on April 16, 2025 at 9:09 am

I lived with an ICU nurse for a few years. We had a plastic tote with meds that she had forgotten to "waste" and left in her scrubs. They all just signed off on each others paperwork without checking anything. I had enough morphine in the house to kill a footfall team. 😂

  15. @ghastlycreations5627 on April 16, 2025 at 9:10 am

i think they should be a check( with a security guard kinda like in the air port ) in the loker room so they check all their pokets before leaving. Some people have to drive too many hrs to the hospital.

  16. @smolpener7430 on April 16, 2025 at 9:11 am

We need to control this substance to prevent shortages.

    Why are there shortages?

Nobody can make it because it’s controlled.

My teacher has told us horror stories about nursing students that accidentally take fentanyl home

  19. @Tionois on April 16, 2025 at 9:15 am

My dad once took home keys to men’s toilet in his workplace and then left for a week of on site work. His one male colleague did NOT appreciate it (no idea if he shared with ladies or walked to other departments). When dad returned, said colleague took the keys and added so much keychains nobody would ever fit that into their pocket.

I used to love Lorazapam when i first took it. I could have been in a plane crsh and been mellow as a peach going down. But now i take lot more of it and it just makes me feel stoned. Gutted!

Can you credit the videos you use?

  25. @Ironiclobster69 on April 16, 2025 at 9:30 am

Couldn’t they stop this from happening by having the other nurse have to sign it back in as well. What’s the point in 2 nurses signing it out if 1 can just take it home. The other nurse should have come to them and reminded them it’s signed out and if they fail to do so both nurses should be on the line. Also at end of shift why isn’t there a logbook check to see if things are back? Something is severely wrong here and needs to be fixed.

  26. @froschreiniger2639 on April 16, 2025 at 9:30 am

The drug war is one of the most idiotic thing ever. If all the stuff were legal, they would not have to treat the vials like nuclear warheads, because nobody would steal them. And it is not like normal people would suddenly start taking fent. I bet the number of addicts would even go down because people could get help and drug crime would not be a thing.

  27. @rs1389 on April 16, 2025 at 9:33 am

It shouldn’t be in your pocket in the first place

  28. @Elizabeth-xo9sn on April 16, 2025 at 9:34 am

I had a pt who claimed I didn’t bring her meds. A Dr.’s wife who was an addict. She claimed I never went in. Lucky for me I always put time and room , on the bottom of the paper cup. I went in with some higher ups and found that cup in the trash can .
Ugh. I felt I aged ten years that night.

  29. @veearce3384 on April 16, 2025 at 9:34 am

Is there a way to log it on an app online for when this happens cause clearly this is going to happen… like log it in the app that you took it home then log it again when you bring it back. No one who isn’t stealing dealing or using should get in trouble.

  30. @ourhome505 on April 16, 2025 at 9:34 am

That is an absolute nightmare. Poor nurse!

  31. @mariadamedecoeur on April 16, 2025 at 9:37 am

I could be mean and day something really bad but not today 😅😇

  32. @AllisonM90 on April 16, 2025 at 9:38 am

Would the nurse not get in trouble if it was an empty vial, like could one just throw that away at home?

  33. @Bekahe on April 16, 2025 at 9:42 am

“Hospital supplies can be diverted for illegal use” is a very fancy way of saying some nurses steal drugs from the hospital 😕

  34. @simonewright1120 on April 16, 2025 at 9:42 am

The struggle is real. It has been ectified, but u took the wasted portion home by mistake.

  35. @BurninBuddha on April 16, 2025 at 9:45 am

😂😂😂😂he just thinking about battling traffic 2 more times just to correct the mistake😂😂😂😂

  36. @TheBookOfPrincessSam on April 16, 2025 at 9:45 am

Kinda like the time I accidentally took the jail keys home when I worked at a jail 🤦🏽‍♀️. I was 💯 honest & returned them the moment I realized, my boss was actually proud that when I addressed it head on instead of trying to make excuses. And I didn’t mind other officers checking behind me to make sure I didn’t do it again.

  37. @nohemilokz8082 on April 16, 2025 at 9:45 am

I’ve come home with empty contrast bottles in my pocket 😑 annoying habit

  38. @JChan-ru2hf on April 16, 2025 at 9:45 am

At work, we had a CRNA who is much older and probably should have retired. She would put Valium in a plastic baggie because she didn’t want to keep walking back-and-forth to the medicine cabinet. Then one day she dropped the baggie with pills in it… then she had no choice but to leave.

  39. @margiecook6879 on April 16, 2025 at 9:46 am

Maybe never stick medication in your pocket?

  40. @JD-rq3ur on April 16, 2025 at 9:46 am

I’ve flipped a few B words driving home after realizing this. Now I pat myself down like a cop before I leave work.

  41. @MathildaFlow on April 16, 2025 at 9:46 am

Yeah… my mom had to deal with colleagues who became addicted. One studied to become an MD after he was fired as a nurse for stealing drugs. He was a bit miffed at my mom when she told the recruiter at her new job to throw his application in the trash. I’m sure he’s fine somewhere else.

  42. @DLlama on April 16, 2025 at 9:50 am

Sounds like a *_really_* annoying and poorly designed system that grinds good people’s health & lives to dust purely for the profit of others. Has anyone thought about, idk, *_not being this way?!?_* Especially controlled substance laws…what a scam.

  43. @puck6380 on April 16, 2025 at 9:50 am

  46. @Daisy-sj6qx on April 16, 2025 at 9:52 am

He should set the alarm in his phone with words "check all the pockets"!

  47. @dflxxhunterxx2 on April 16, 2025 at 9:56 am

When I was doing my EMT Internship at the ICU a vial of Sufentanil went missing and naturally everyone suspected the intern.
My conscience was clean so I denied everything. Luckily they found it again later in the day. It was a bit scary though.

  48. @lillianahunter1199 on April 16, 2025 at 9:59 am

I work in the pharmacy managing the dispensing of controlled medications.

The number of times I’ve had to hunt down nurses for missing controlled medications makes me feel like the equivalent of a pharmaceutical bounty hunter. 😅

  49. @spookybaby1313 on April 16, 2025 at 9:59 am

I once took the CD cupboard keys home with me 😩 hour journey too by taxi. I was so angry with myself.
