The Real Cost of Cannabis Stocks | Trade to Black

In our latest Trade to Black podcast, Shadd Dales dives deep into understanding what the real cost of cannabis stocks truly is.

With the cannabis industry evolving rapidly, investors are left to navigate a maze of challenges, from federal cannabis rescheduling and legalization uncertainty to the burdensome tax structure under Section 280E.

Shadd explores how these factors impact the stock market, highlighting both the opportunities and pitfalls investors need to consider.

The discussion focuses on key company earnings, price compression, and the importance of margins in the cannabis sector. Additionally, it sheds light on how cannabis tax liabilities and high operating costs weigh heavily on profitability.

Shadd addresses the future of cannabis stocks, emphasizing what investors should look for in balance sheets, including red flags like debt or shareholder dilution.

As federal cannabis reform lingers and markets become increasingly competitive, this episode provides critical insights to help investors make informed decisions in the complex landscape of cannabis stocks.

Do you own any cannabis stocks Shadd?

  2. @emjr83 on August 21, 2025 at 3:19 pm

Thanks Shadd for an important info for shareholders

Cannabis companies’ financials are abysmal, yet a 15 year old can grow all he and his friends need in a closet with Miracle Grow, and a few fluorescent bulbs? And Mexican Cartels have done extraordinary well with their large scale pot industry?

  4. @GrowinOld on August 21, 2025 at 3:20 pm

    Great information. Thanks.

From $400 average cost to $9 average cost in Aurora. If I’m right I’m a millionaire. If I’m wrong god help me😢.

  6. @joesphreiley7757 on August 21, 2025 at 3:21 pm

Curaleaf stock goes down everyday, it’s now under one dollar. I have heard every excuse over many years why Curaleaf stock is failing, sick of hearing these excuses.

  7. @jmantkd87 on August 21, 2025 at 3:23 pm

It seems like nothing and everything will change until schedule 3. For now enjoy the cheap stock prices and keep accumulating.

  8. @Matt-hv4rg on August 21, 2025 at 3:24 pm

Sounds like Aurora is the number one 1 imo. Their next earnings should be very good

CANNABIS STOCKS ARE DROPPING BECAUSE OF TRUMP , TRUMP KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING .

  10. @andrewc9048 on August 21, 2025 at 3:31 pm

No one is taking about this but interstate commerce would be huge for the industry.

  11. @JP-nl5ls on August 21, 2025 at 3:31 pm

Isn’t that illegal?🤦…………. Cannabis industry is the only industry with that tax rate

  12. @ryanporter1819 on August 21, 2025 at 3:32 pm

Cannabis stocks will get their day in the sun, I’m confident about that. Cannabis stock prices are at an all time low and trending lower.

Now is a good time to start buying. Beware, there are some stocks that might not recover.

I’ve lost a lot so far, but that’s ok, I can be patient. Realistically, rescheduling can take a couple of years but it can happen in a couple of months. I am happy to buy more at these low prices. I’m looking to get into Curaleaf, Verano and Ascend. Sold my position with AYR at a huge loss but rotating what I have left into a winner like Ascend, will be a good thing.

Hemp derived cannabis has overwhelmed the market. Ounces are 80 bucks of hemp derived weed while a ounce of dispensary cannabis is up and around $250!… Cleveland Ohio

IT DROPPED BECAUSE DELTA 8 SUCKS BRING BACK DELTA 9 OLD FASHIONED CHECH AND CHONG POT

  15. @davidbenz2280 on August 21, 2025 at 3:36 pm

Nice report Shadd. I would also include the market shenanigans going on with the larger, exchange-listed names. So much shorting and naked shorting going on! Many of these companies are now trading at a discount to BOOK VALUE. There are many pirates out there, and some are the actual market makers for these equity securities. Also, as many of us have learned the hard way, some cannabis companies are issuing shares at a rapid clip, to raise cash for acquisitions or operations. This dilutes existing shareholders, and puts downward pressure on the stock price. Thanks for educating the cannabis investors out there!

Cannabis rescheduling could be a saviour for Trump as his tariffs do damage to global markets

  17. @-REMOwilliams on August 21, 2025 at 3:39 pm

280E and Banking seem to be a huge problem. Rescheduling from 1 to 3 seems necessary to move forward, regardless of the Big Pharma issues. Hard to know what Trump really wants for the U.S. – But why not allow U.S. Cannabis to be a global leader. Why not want that. Seems to me helping legalization on the Federal level, helps squeeze out the illicit market. Hurting cartels should be something Trump is interested in. Doing something no other President was able to do, should be of interest to Trump. Job creation, defunding cartels, world leader in cannabis production. Seems like a lot of potential wins here.

  18. @Cookie222 on August 21, 2025 at 3:42 pm

Schedule 3 needs to get done. The most important thing for me is the SAFER Banking Act. That’s when the whale investors can come in and boost the stocks.

  19. @sylviaazzaro405 on August 21, 2025 at 3:42 pm

    Great info! ❤

  20. @charleswatkins9554 on August 21, 2025 at 3:46 pm

Well the crooks have been making money of weed for 90 years and weapons ask big bush

  21. @dropaknee3362 on August 21, 2025 at 3:46 pm

Lowest cost producer with best quality wins…..it’s not hard. Retail investors just think they recreate the wheel.

  22. @fb5149 on August 21, 2025 at 3:46 pm

It just doesn’t stop; it’s only gone in one direction for years. Unbelievable! It won’t be long now before everything will be worthless!

  23. @fairway5479 on August 21, 2025 at 3:50 pm

It’s simple one factor……..too much product. Only a finite amount of people will buy cannabis. It’s like the gambling industry, you’re not going to start gambling just because there is now a casino near you. Only a certain percentage of the population will gamble or take cannabis

  24. @LucLeFou on August 21, 2025 at 3:57 pm

~pokes stocks with a stick~ come on do something already

  25. @markplacek6657 on August 21, 2025 at 4:00 pm

  26. @MarcTurk on August 21, 2025 at 4:04 pm

Why buy when it can be grown on your own ,in many states,

  27. @JamesChryst on August 21, 2025 at 4:07 pm

    NO I dropped 8k to zero quick.😊

  28. @ZTK-RC on August 21, 2025 at 4:09 pm

Honestly it’s over for cannabis at the federal level, sorry folks. Time to pack it in until 2027 for the next presidential elections.

  29. @johnlee6835 on August 21, 2025 at 4:10 pm

Cannabis companies are “playing” by the rules 😂 in a country that could care less about freedom of choice. They need to start acting like the drug dealer they are. Sell the goods and get out. Stop trying to be all fancy and legitimate, you’re not in this business

  30. @Jerrycrush-it on August 21, 2025 at 4:11 pm

    Great time to buy stock.

  31. @zero_grav_original on August 21, 2025 at 4:11 pm

Once all those costs can be written off, get ready for corporate cannabis to drop the bulk price right down even further into the toilet putting more pressure on small craft farms to sell below their realistic scale can afford.
Corporate shwag cannabis is going to be the nail in the coffin for quality products.

  32. @joedoherty100 on August 21, 2025 at 4:12 pm

Hows canopy growth doing on their balance sheets?

  33. @seanscott8277 on August 21, 2025 at 4:15 pm

So is rescheduling off the table for 2025? Because this constant carrot on a stick is not healthy.
