Assessments and assignments: Small issues and big ones too – Professor Dan O’Flaherty

Dan O’Flaherty’s presentation challenged orthodox thinking regarding the efficiency and fairness of existing assessments tools. O’Flaherty questioned the evidence behind assessments tools, and argued that consumers hold important knowledge about their situation that is ignored by tools that rely on prescribed questions determined by service providers or the developers of assessment tools. Not only did Dan raise questions about the efficacy of existing approaches he also raised important questions about their fairness. Dan’s presentation was timely as Government and homelessness agencies look to develop (or even purchase) assessments tools based on dubious assumptions and evidence.

ABOUT THE HOMELESSNESS POLICY AND PRACTICE IN THE US FORUM

The Homelessness Policy and Practice in the US forum was held on July 20. It brought together Associate Professor Stephen Metraux, Associate Professor Stefan Kertesz, and Professor Dan O’Flaherty to give three unique perspectives on the challenges and lessons learned from tackling homelessness in the US.

With expertise in economics, sociology, and clinical work, the presenters have each been influential in setting American policy directions. The forum provided an opportunity for practitioners and policymakers to reflect upon the relevance of their ideas for service delivery and practice in Australia.

The forum was hosted by:
The Centre for Applied Social Research, RMIT University
The Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research, University of Melbourne
The Victorian Council of Social Services
The Council to Homeless Persons
