How Rescheduling Could Spark Cannabis M&A and Lending Growth | Trade to Black

On the latest Trade To Black Podcast, host Shadd Dales and co-host Anthony Varrell connect with Peter Sack, Managing Partner of Chicago Atlantic (NASDAQ: LIEN) to break down the company’s Q2 2025 results and what’s ahead for cannabis lending.

Chicago Atlantic BDC Inc. just earned $0.34 per share, matched that with a $0.34 dividend, says every borrower is current, and has more than $125 million in available cash and credit. We explore what’s driving those results — and why they matter for investors.

We also dig into how cannabis rescheduling rumors could impact the lending market. An announcement from Washington could create a wave of new deal activity for Chicago Atlantic, while also fast-tracking mergers and acquisitions across the cannabis sector.

Peter walks us through the fundamentals: fully covered dividends, interest rate sensitivity, and maintaining a portfolio with zero missed payments. We discuss deal flow, including the $780 million pipeline across cannabis and non-cannabis lending, portfolio concentration risks, and how Chicago Atlantic decides when to tap its $100 million credit facility.

From lending strategy to capital deployment, and from U.S. federal reform to global cannabis investment opportunities.

Schedule 3, SAFER Banking, and Federally legalized medical cannabis are low-risk reform measures within easy reach that will appease the vast majority of American voters while offending very few. Anything less (e.g., Schedule 2) will leave too much juicy meat on the bone for someone else to pick off. (With 80% of U.S. states having already legalized medical cannabis, Federal legalization should be a slam dunk!!!)

Why keep wasting time, money & resources chasing a revolving door of drug dealers who contribute nothing to society, and who are the true gateway to lethal drugs. Instead, you can… 1) create honest jobs for hardworking Americans while defining & exercising appropriate industry oversight, 2) generate significant & predictable tax revenue to help fund life-changing drug research and truly life-saving policing efforts, and 3) provide a runway for American companies to grow & thrive in this burgeoning industry so they can get a head start on developing superior products & expertise that can then be exported to the benefit of the entire country.

This is low-hanging fruit that’s ready for harvest – all the Republicans have to do is pick it off the branch. If it’s left to fall on the ground where anyone can pick it up, then the Republicans may lose precious control…and I highly doubt that the next installment of a Democrat Administration will stumble on this issue like the last one.

By taking control of cannabis reform NOW and at this stage, the Republicans snatch the issue from the Democrats with limited risk. It also gives Republicans control to define many of the rules & regulations under which the industry must operate, with less interference from the opposition. Any further reform (i.e., de-scheduling; recreational becoming Federally legal) would come with much greater risks and will not be undertaken lightly by Democrats. In other words, cannabis may cease to be a campaign concern for Republicans going forward if President Trump and his administration choose to back Schedule 3, SAFER Banking, and Federally legalized medical cannabis.

Cannabis is going to be resisted by the evangelical segment of his base. He has already bled off a lot of support over tariffs, Epstein, etc.

He has said “we’ll have an answer in two weeks” more than a few times and never followed through. I’m not holding my breath and fail to be able to relate to my modest garden as a commodity on the stock market. My first encounter with the plant dates back to 1970, over 55 years ago.

Trump should realize how much money this will bring in.

Fluent Corp is one of their borrowers. Fluent is also backed by Scotts Miracle Grow through its subsidiary Hawthorne Collective. Not sure why Fluent is way under the radar. It has licenses and operations in New York, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Texas which account for 25% of the total US population.

Does Trump want to be remembered for the one who rescheduled or legalized?

Florida didn’t vote yes on the bill because growing for any kind of adults was not in it. It was a lobbied bill in favor of only the black market and companies like Trulieve. – Florida Voter

Make marijuana legal nationwide please. I live with Chronic Pain day in and day out and I would love to be able to at least try a natural plant that God has given to us so I can hopefully not have to rely on manufactured pill

Trump clearly will ultimately decide whether MJ gets rescheduled to what ever level. Stocks have speculatively bounced off all times lows hoping he will reschedule to at least III based on headlines. If he reschedules to III or better expect a gap up open on sticks. If not and it’s status quo and expect the reverse with opens of gap downs on stocks and testing lows again as support. It’s that simple.

  15. @erickrause12 on September 22, 2025 at 4:53 pm

Nobody is lowering rates in the midst of tariff based inflation and bad fiscal policy. Powell is 100% correct

Would not be in the non traditional lending space if schedule III is adopted. Would be crazy for me to be in non traditional MJ lending space if fully desheduled.

Don’t be surprised if it’s completely de scheduled, When any logical person presents how realistically, if you take Tylenol into comparison, taking 10-20 at a take would cause death, smoking as much as you can humanly consume will only put you to sleep and cause rise of appetite, its not as dangerous as alcohol and if you smoke as many cigarettes as you humanly can you will likely cause severe damage and possible death, which leads me to believe and understand, congress and all this structure is silly and this is just Slavery at the end of the day, with an elusive of freedom via the options they allow and assign.
